BCG DIGITAL VENTURES, MISC CO-INVESTMENT IN 3 VENTURES TO DISRUPT MARITIME SOLUTIONS SPACE

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- BCG Digital Ventures (BCGDV), the business-building and corporate innovation arm of Boston Consulting Group (BCG), has announced its previous investment in three ventures namely, SOL-X, Chord X, and Spares CNX.

With the objective of disrupting the shipping industry, BCGDV has also announced that the three maritime ventures are joining its broader portfolio of innovative businesses and products with the backing of BCGDV and leading international shipping company MISC Group.

“With 90 per cent of the world’s goods transported by ships, and considering the fragmented attempts at innovation, we believe these investments are going to be absolutely transformative to the maritime industry, as well as to industries such as mining, energy, and industrial goods,” said Managing Director & Partner and Global Leader of BCGDV’s Energy Practice, Sid Shah.

Meanwhile, President/Group Chief Executive Officer of MISC, Yee Yang Chien said: “We are proud to invest in these three digital start-ups, which in many ways allow us to explore available opportunities to harness the power of digitalisation in the maritime industry.”

BCGDV’s investment was made last year while the ventures were in stealth mode to allow for a deeper focus on business development activities, including staffing, product development, and target market acquisition.

According to a statement, the ventures will be key drivers for the smart ship, which leverages automation and assistive technologies to ensure safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

The Ventures, SOL-X is redefining maritime safety by creating an industry-first Safety 4.0 company centered on human factors; Chord X is a maritime data analytics company; while Spares CNX is reinventing the shipping supply chain by providing an automated inventory management solution that can track the life cycle of spare parts on shore and across the fleet.

All three ventures are based in Singapore, a critical hub for BCGDV that was recently placed at the top of the IMD World Competitive Center’s ranking in digital competitiveness.

BAKKEN ENERGY REACHES AGREEMENT WITH BASIN ELECTRIC TO PURCHASE DAKOTA GASIFICATION COMPANY ASSETS

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Clean energy infrastructure developer Bakken Energy (Bakken) has reached agreement with Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Basin Electric) on key terms and conditions to purchase the assets of the Dakota Gasification Company (Dakota Gas), a subsidiary of Basin Electric, and the owner of the Great Plains Synfuels Plant (Synfuels Plant).

According to a statement, the closing is subject to the satisfaction of specified conditions and expected to be completed by April 1, 2023.

Located near Beulah, North Dakota, the Synfuels Plant will be transformed into the largest and lowest-cost, clean hydrogen production facility in the United States.

In June 2021, Bakken and Mitsubishi Power Americas (Mitsubishi) announced they had entered into a strategic partnership to create a world-class clean hydrogen hub in North Dakota to produce, store, transport, and locally capture and sequester carbon (CO2).

The Synfuels Plant facility will form the nucleus of a clean energy hub designed to aggressively advance regional, national, and global decarbonisation objectives via the development of clean hydrogen applications for the agriculture, power, and transportation sectors.

The North Dakota Hydrogen Hub is expected to be commercially operational in late 2026 with a redevelopment budget for the broader hub including carbon capture and sequestration and hydrogen storage exceeding US$2 billion. (US$1 = RM4.237)

“Rapidly establishing the viability of low-cost clean hydrogen supply to meet the acceleration of clean hydrogen demand is critical to developing our nation’s hydrogen economy,” said Bakken Energy Chairman and Founder Steve Lebow.

“We are excited to work with the communities that depend on the sustained and growing employment our shared successes will provide. Our vision is that the Synfuels Plant will continue its historic role as a hub of innovation and pioneering spirit for the great benefit of generations to come.”

As part of the agreement between Basin Electric and Bakken, the Synfuels Plant will continue existing operations through 2025.

The transformation of the existing facility and subsequent operations of the redeveloped clean hydrogen production facility will require the same level of highly skilled employees.

COACH AND GROW PROGRAMME GRADUATES GENERATED AN AVERAGE REVENUE GROWTH OF 163% FOR 2020-21

Key Statistics from The Coach and Grow Programme Season 5’

10 year public-private collaboration between Cradle and Proficeo proves itself once again in helping Malaysian tech start-ups and scaleups

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Known in the ecosystem as the best C-suite intervention programmes, the Coach & Grow Programme (CGP) has proven itself once again with its current cohort of graduating companies. The CGP is a public-private partnership between Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd (Cradle), Malaysia’s leading early stage influencer and industry partner, Proficeo, and is designed to bring together key players in the entrepreneurial ecosystem to support and fortify technology entrepreneurs to scale their businesses to greater heights.

Launched in the midst of the 1st Movement Control Order in 2020, Season 5 or Cohort 5 of the programme came at an opportune time helping 108 companies navigate the unprecedented changing economic and business landscape that came as an aftershock to the pandemic that shook the world.

When we started, MCO 1.0 was just launched. Many of the companies were still reeling from trying to figure out how to move into virtual business mode, Work-from-Home, keeping customers happy etc. Even all of us at Proficeo had to find solutions to coordinate and run the program virtually. It was chaos in the beginning but I knew we had to persevere because more than ever the entrepreneurs needed us to help them through survival and pivoting” said Renuka Sena, CEO and Co-Founder of Proficeo Consultants. The economic impact of the pandemic has shifted dynamics in society from the way we live, work, play and how consumers and businesses spend their money. The dramatic shifts that have been taking place and will continue to take place has forced companies to rethink their go-to-market and scaling models. “What used to work in the past was no longer a certainty”, she added.

Case in point, AI Smartual that came into the programme with an e-learning platform for students and teachers. Some may say that it was perfect timing for their product as students, teachers and parents were forced to use e-learning platforms as a tool to facilitate learning during the lockdown. The industry was ready and looking for solutions but it was wrong timing for AI Smartual as their product was new and untested. To give credit to the founder, they did try but the e-learning space was busy and competitive and they struggled. Their Coaches and mentors worked with AI Smartual to rethink how to utilise their asset to capture a niche market. As it happened, the founder David Cheng had vast experience with listed companies and handling investor relations. Additionally he had good networks and credibility in this market segment. As such, six months into the programme the company launched their e-AGM solution into the market, and from being on the verge of giving up AI Smartual is now solidly booked out for the rest of the year and generating revenue in excess of RM200k.

AI Smartual is one of the many compelling business turnaround stories. In fact the average revenue growth rate of the CGP5 companies is 163%, an incredible feat in view of the ensuing economic lockdown that has plagued the country since 2020. “Despite a highly challenging year, these companies with the help of their coaches not only survived but also increased their total cumulative sales by RM68 million”  said Rafiza Ghazali, Group CEO of Cradle. “For 108 companies to chalk up a total of RM176 million in 12 month over RM108 million achieved in the preceding 12 months is unprecedented under normal circumstances but during a pandemic is just inspiring. I’m sure all the CGP5 Graduates are extremely grateful for the support they received through CGP”, she added.

Rewarded for their achievements, companies that were outstanding in the various industry verticals were recognised for their achievements during the virtual graduation ceremony.  A notable award recipient was Women Entrepreneur of the Year, Rena Rifaee, Co-founder of Natugee, who overcame personal and business challenges to grow her business by 650% since joining the CGP.

Unlike the previous cohorts, this time around Companies and Founders were also assessed and rewarded for their resilience, persistence and contributions to the ecosystem during COVID-19.  Cradle and Proficeo social media channels were abuzz over the past couple of weeks with “Road to Graduation” content honouring start-ups in categories like “Tech-for-Good” recognising start-ups creating social impact; “Empowerment platforms” for women, youth, seniors and e-commerce;  “COVID Game Changers” for companies that are disrupting their industries and “Future-Tech” for companies in the forefront of AI, Robotics, AR/VR and Nanotechnology.  “It was a tough year and so many of the companies in this Cohort worked hard and rose to the challenge so we thought the very least we could do was to recognise their achievements”, said Renuka. “I would give them all an award if I could because this Cohort was definitely the best ever in terms of calibre, resilience and true entrepreneurship spirit”, she added proudly.

Now a decade old, the graduating cohort will join the CGP alumni network making up a total of 577 companies strong. They will join the ranks of notable alumni such as iPay88, Easyparcel, Babydash, JomParking, Signature Market, Dropee and Doctor-on-Call.

You can learn more about the graduating companies here.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Money transfer specialist WorldRemit has officially launched its services to send money from Malaysia.

WorldRemit is a British fintech giant with a global footprint and is seen as one of the leading providers of cross-border payments in the world.

Starting this week, WorldRemit customers can send money from Malaysia, in addition to 50 other countries including the UK and the USA, to more than 130 destinations worldwide.

In most places, WorldRemit customers will be able to choose from multiple methods to send remittances and for their recipients to receive money. These include bank deposits, payments to mobile wallets, cash pick-up and mobile airtime top-up. Customers can send their Malaysian Ringgit to Indian Rupee, Indonesian Rupiah, Philippine Peso, US Dollar, etc.

Malaysia country director for WorldRemit Ridzuan Aziz told us, “We’re passionate about making sure that customers can continue to make affordable money transfers to their family and friends from the comfort of their homes. Since 2010, we have disrupted traditional money transfer methods by delivering services that customers can access via smartphones at their convenience.”

WorldRemit is providing easier money transfer service for migrants in Malaysia

Malaysia is home to the East Asia and Pacific region's 4th largest migrant population, with World Bank estimating that migrant workers, including from countries such as the Philippines, India, and Indonesia, account for 15% of the Malaysian workforce.

WorldRemit services will be available to customers in Malaysia from the mobile app on Android Play Store and the Apple App store, as well as the website. The company said its ‘service is expected to see widespread adoption in major urban centres, as well as with the increasing number of migrant workers who are employed in plantations and other rural locations’.

For migrant workers, the company says its services will provide added convenience as they can avoid having to make long journeys to send money transfers from traditional shop-fronts.

Mr Aziz said, “With communities across the world having to change their lifestyles due to the disruption caused by Covid-19, we’re proud to play our part in making sure our customers can continue to support those dearest to them throughout this challenging time.”
