2018 GLOBAL THREAT INTELLIGENCE REPORT: FINANCE REMAINS THE SECTOR MOST SUSCEPTIBLE TO ATTACKS IN APAC, DESPITE 20 PERCENT DROP IN VOLUME

NTT Security report shows brute forcing as top attack type within APAC for all industry sectors at 26 percent, reflecting attackers’ desire to decode encrypted data through automated software

SINGAPORE, April 26 (Bernama-GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NTT Security, the specialised security company and centre of excellence in security for NTT Group, has published its 2018 Global Threat Intelligence Report (GTIR). The report reveals the number of attacks on the finance sector in APAC has dropped from 46 percent to 26 percent compared to the previous year, along with 3 new industries that made it to the top 5 attacked industries – Technology, Retail and Government.

NTT Security summarises data from over 6.1 trillion logs and 150 million attacks for the 2018 GTIR, which analyses global threat trends based on log, event, attack, incident and vulnerability data from NTT Group operating companies and highlights the latest ransomware, phishing and DDoS attack trends, demonstrating the evolving threat landscape faced by global organizations.

In APAC, the report shows the attacks targeting the finance sector have continued to be a threat despite a 20 percent drop versus a year ago. On the other hand, attacks targeting the manufacturing sector have significantly decreased to seven percent from 32 percent in the same period.  Even though the APAC region tends to have a strong representation in the manufacturing sector, with China and Korea being two of the world’s leading manufacturing countries, the sector is no longer listed among the top five most attacked industries in this year’s report.

Attacks against retail and education sectors were at 15 percent and 18 percent respectively. Education, in particular, saw a dramatic jump from three percent to 18 percent in attack volume, alongside technology industry from five percent to 16 percent. Technology was the only sector to appear in the top five most attacked industries in every geographic region (Americas, APAC, EMEA and Japan, as well as globally). Though most regions saw a decrease in attacks against government targets, APAC actually had a seven percent increase, from six percent to 13 percent.

Overall, the top five most targeted industries in APAC, namely finance, education, technology, retail and government, comprised 88 percent of all attacks last year. This suggests that attackers spread out attacks more evenly across a focused set of industries.

Malware and brute force attacks dominate in APAC

In APAC, viruses and worms accounted for 66 percent of malware, nearly three times the global percentage of 23 percent.  Whilst the report shows an increasing trend of ransomware nearly in every region, it played a role in only 2 percent of malware-related attacks for APAC targets. Conversely, brute force attacks accounted for 26 percent of all attacks in the region, but were ranked the twelfth most common attack type in both the Americas and EMEA.

Brute force attacks spiked to 64 percent for the retail and education sectors in APAC, and was the leading attack type in the region, at 26 percent. A brute force attack usually uses automated software to perform many consecutive guesses to identify usernames and passwords.  Simple passwords can be broken in seconds or minutes depending on password complexity.

Jon Heimerl, Senior Manager of the Threat Intelligence Communication Team, Global Threat Intelligence Centre at NTT Security, says: “The GTIR clearly demonstrates the uphill battle organisations face in achieving an optimal balance between operational security and compliance initiatives. In order to be successful they cannot afford to be complacent and must recognise that having a firm grasp on what it takes to remain secure is a fundamental part of everyday business operations.”

“In an ever-evolving threat landscape, defending your organization is no small task, but focusing on key areas outlined in our report, such as incident response plans, multi-factor and strong authentication, comprehensive and reliable patching and usable but effective security measures, can help to build the security posture of an organisation.”

Summary of other key global findings:
  • Top attack source countries: United States (27%), China (19%), Netherlands (4%)
  • Ransomware increased from being 1% of global malware in the 2017 GTIR to nearly 7%
  • Ransomware incident response engagement fell from over 22% of incidents in 2016 to just over 5% in 2017
  • Business and professional services joined the list of the top five globally attacked industry sectors in third position at 10%
  • The gaming sector was the most targeted by ransomware in 2017 at 20%, followed by business and professional services at 17%, healthcare and manufacturing both at 12% and technology at 11%
  • Financial services (18%) and healthcare (15%) were the two most common sectors to seek incident response services

The 2018 GTIR gathers data from NTT Security monitoring, management, and incident response operations. It also includes details from NTT Security research sources including global honeypots and sandboxes in over 100 countries in environments independent from institutional infrastructures.

To learn more about the most important global threats and the actions management, technical staff and users can take to improve their security posture, follow the link to download the NTT Security 2018 GTIR: https://www.nttsecurity.com/gtir.

JDS DEVELOPMENT GROUP SECURES $137 MILLION CONSTRUCTION FINANCING FROM MADISON REALTY CAPITAL FOR DISTINCTIVE MIAMI BEACH CONDOMINIUM MONAD TERRACE

New York-based Madison Realty Capital Provides Final Funding for Pritzker Prize-Winner Jean Nouvel’s First Built Work in Miami

MIAMI , April 25 (Bernama-GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- New York-based Madison Realty Capital has provided a $137 million construction loan to New York-based JDS Development Group for Monad Terrace. The deal indicates conviction in the development team, the high-design product by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel and the South Beach market’s extremely limited new development inventory and viability. The financing will fully capitalize the project, which features 59 individually-designed waterfront residences.

“This is a unique assemblage of land within a prime waterfront residential enclave in South Beach, Miami and we are excited to close another transaction with an esteemed developer like Michael Stern,” said Josh Zegen, Co-Founder and Managing Principal of MRC. “In addition, there’s virtually no new development product coming out of the ground in South Beach right now, so we offered a customized financing solution for JDS’s needs given our knowledge of the market. It was a special opportunity to support an A-team in one of the most attractive markets for real estate.”

China CEIS and HSF release 'Xinhua HSF Price Indices'

KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 (Bernama) -- China Economic Information Service (CEIS) and Haiken Group (HSF) recently released 'Xinhua HSF Price Indices' in Haikou, capital city of south China's Hainan Province.

"Xinhua HSF Price Indices intuitively present the price changes of natural rubber, pepper and areca nut, and objectively and accurately reflect factor price fluctuations in different links of the industry chain, thereby providing an open and transparent price guide to the industries," said vice-president of CEIS, Liu Mingxia.

"The indices help players engaged in the production, circulation and processing to duly and accurately study and predict market prices whereby they rationally guide market expectations," added Liu.

The indices include China Natural Rubber Price Index, Pepper Price Index and Areca Nut Price Index, a statement said.

Xinhua HSF China Natural Rubber Price Index is China's first price index system supported by the spot market trade data and connecting the rubber production and sales comprising four sub-indices including concentrated latex, latex, mixed rubber and standard rubber. The index is an important carrier showcasing the influence of China's rubber industry.

As a leader in natural rubber producer and major tropical crop producer in China, HSF has a natural rubber area of 3.69 million mu (15 mu equal one hectare) and a tropical crop area of 1.5 million mu.

Chairman of HSF, Yang Sitao said HSF will widen the cooperation with CEIS to gradually improve the system of Xinhua HSF Price Indices and enrich index dimensions to create internationally influential and credible price indices, and build HSF into a new growth pole for Hainan's economy as well as a characteristic national tropical agriculture demonstration zone.

CEIS is a wholly-owned company of Xinhua News Agency and boasts five national-level platforms including Xinhua Finance, Xinhua Silkroad, Xinhua Credit, Shanghai Petroleum and Natural Gas Exchange (SHPGX) and Xinhua Think Tank.

Aryaka speeds up Office 365 application experience worldwide

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 (Bernama) -- Aryaka's SD-WAN technology has enabled City and Guilds Group -- a worldwide leader in workplace skills, e-Learning and executive coaching to achieve faster Office 365 application response times to increase productivity and better collaboration between users in Europe and Asia Pacific.

Aryaka's technology has reduced time for global users to open SharePoint files from 10 to 0.05 seconds and the Outlook performance improves nine times worldwide, a statement said.

As the members of the Group are scattered around the world and primarily collaborate using Microsoft Office 365 applications, many remote users were struggling to access the Group's instance of Office 365 hosted in Dublin.

It could take over 37 seconds to open one file from the corporate SharePoint drive. Besides leading to a high number of user complaints, the performance issues limited adoption of Office 365 for global employees.

"Our users in Wellington, New Zealand saw delays between 10 to 15 seconds opening a standard Microsoft Word document, which was impacting productivity. We knew this would be a barrier to further collaboration and helping us reach our revenue goals," said chief information officer for City and Guilds Group, Alan Crawford.

The Group selected Aryaka's global SD-WAN because it ables the company to deploy the solution in an hour and users saw dramatic improvements in application performance and could suddenly collaborate on Office 365 in real-time.

"With Aryaka's global SD-WAN, enterprises can act quickly to capitalise on changing business needs in near real-time, instead of suffering from slow application performance and project implementation delays," said founder and chief technology officer of Aryaka, Ashwath Nagaraj.

"We are delighted to see the results City and Guilds Group has been able to achieve with our global SD-WAN as a Service," he added.

According to the recent State of SD-WAN Connectivity Report, the average time for a 100 KB file to traverse Internet links from Asia to the Americas can be as high as 4,000 milliseconds unlike those on Aryaka's, achieving on average 4.1 times faster application performance and 2.5 times less variation in response times.

CHINA'S BAKERY INDUSTRY @ BAKERY CHINA 2018 (MAY 9-12, SHANGHAI)

SHANGHAI, April 23 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- With an exhibition area of over 200,000 square meters this year, Bakery China 2018, to be held on May 9-12, has attracted more than 2,100 exhibitors from all over the world.

As an important indicator of China’s robust growth on bakery, Bakery China (www.bakerychina.com) was launched 21 years ago and has developed into the world’s largest exhibition in this area. As the organisers of this high-profile and impactful event, China Association of Bakery & Confectionery Industry (CABCI) and Bakery China Exhibitions Co., Ltd. will welcome more than 140,000 professional visitors from over 110 countries and regions at the Shanghai New International Expo Center for Bakery China 2018, where every participant will truly experience the vibrant prosperity and innovation of China’s bakery industry.

China’s bakery industry, which has been experiencing a rapid growth since the end of last century, boasted a 20% average growth rate between 2003 and 2016 and is emerging as a global leader in the industry. In the forthcoming months, the country is expected to become the largest producer and consumer of bakery products. According to statistics on bakery enterprises above state-designated scale from the National Bureau of Statistics of China, in 2017, China’s bakery and confectionery production (including pastry/breads, biscuits, chocolates, frozen beverages, instant noodles and sweetmeats) totalled 35.899 million tons, with a prime operating revenue of RMB 743.178 billion, at a year-on-year growth of 8.29%.

As indicated by CABCI, based on a population of 1.37 billion, China’s per capita annual consumption of bread in 2017 was only 4.4kg. Compared to an average of 10kg in South Korea, over 20kg in Japan and over 70-80kg in the US and Western European countries, it is obvious that China holds great potential of growth and expansion. Fast urbanisation and diversification of people’s diets will be the key drivers for the growth of the bakery industry in China.
