KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 (Bernama) -- The Emirate of Sharjah has granted US$1.1 million to Amel Association International, in recognition of its outstanding efforts to those affected by the Lebanese civil war that broke out in 1975. (US$1 = RM4.14).
The independent non-sectarian Lebanese non-governmental organisation (NGO) protects human rights, apart from providing education, child protection and livelihood opportunities.
In recent years, Amel has shown exceptional leadership in offering humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees seeking asylum in Lebanon, and expanded its operations to several countries including France, Switzerland and the United States.
Last year, the organisation’s beneficiaries exceeded 100,000, including 50,000 women and children.
In addition, Amel’s founder, Dr Kamel Mohanna received his fourth Nobel Peace Prize nomination this year.
The NGO received the grant during the Sharjah International Award for Refugee Advocacy and Support (SIARA) recently.
SIARA aims to significantly bolster the efforts of the non-profit organisation, which has been working tirelessly since 1979 to provide emergency as well as rehabilitation assistance to those in need.
SIARA was launched by The Big Heart Foundation to highlight individuals or organisations who implement pioneering and influential initiatives that have had a positive and tangible impact on refugees within Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.
