ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, April 29 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- TUM (Technical University of Munich) from Germany, claimed victory at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL), at Yas Marina Circuit on Saturday (April 27). As the cars lined up on the grid, with antennae, sensors, AI capabilities, and drive-by-wire systems instead of human drivers, eight teams vied with one another over two days of races and challenges. TUM beat back the competition with its coding and engineering skills in a world-first, four-car race finale, to claim the winner’s share of US$2.25 million prize pot.

Bringing a science experiment to the racetrack, the inaugural race pushed the boundaries of autonomous technology while adding entertainment value to extreme sports at an unprecedented scale. A2RL drew over 10,000 spectators at the circuit and captured the attention of over 600,000 online viewers in just 12 hours. Organized by ASPIRE, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), A2RL fuses extreme autonomous racing and AI to accelerate the global development of autonomous systems and technologies.

Following months of meticulous preparation spent refining driving AI algorithms in simulations, A2RL’s customized Dallara Super Formula SF23 cars tested the limits of human ingenuity and AI capability. Each team utilized an identical Super Formula race car - the fastest open-wheel race car in the world after Formula One- adapted for autonomous racing by the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), a sister company of ASPIRE.

Teams faced a complex task in coding. From understanding grip levels, managing tire temperatures, predicting opponent movements, performing successful overtakes, and operating the SF23 right at the limit of grip, the AI needed to perform all the things that racing drivers do intuitively. Additionally, with four autonomous cars racing on the track simultaneously, it marked a world-first attempt that added another layer of challenge.

In a last-lap shootout, the German outfit TUM snatched first place in a daring overtake when front-running Italian team UNIMORE slowed down and came to a stop on the track. The team was congratulated on the racetrack by H.H. Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed, who presented the Championship Trophy, along with H.E. Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary General, ATRC, and Strategic Research & Advanced Technology Affairs Advisor to the UAE President.

Simon Hoffmann, Team Principal, said: “This event has been nothing short of extraordinary, and the finale was our defining moment. We are absolutely thrilled with the outcome; it speaks volumes about our collective engineering prowess, coding expertise, and sheer determination. It's a testament to the incredible power of AI driving the evolution of autonomous mobility into the future!"

Spectators also enjoyed the riveting AI versus Human Race, where the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), pitted its autonomous car against renowned Formula One driver Daniil Kvyat. While Kvyat managed to hold his own and edge past his autonomous adversary by 10.38 secs, the spectacular 45-minute race highlighted just how close the autonomous race car performs against a human driver.

H.E. Al Bannai, said: “Through the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, we've sparked a race revolution. Showcasing fully autonomous racecars competing wheel-to-wheel, we've redefined the UAE's role in innovation and set a bold precedent for global mobility. This event isn't just a race; it's a transformative moment where technology, imagination, and ambition converge. A2RL serves as a beacon, inspiring the next generation through physical and virtual realities, while shaping a future where the impossible becomes achievable."

H.E. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and Group MD & CEO of ADNOC, as Title Sponsor, said: “Advances in artificial intelligence promise to transform every industry. The A2RL demonstrates the application of AI and as title sponsor, ADNOC is proud to help push the frontiers of science and innovation.”

Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, said: “The launch of A2RL has reshaped the landscape of sports and technology, leaving a lasting impact for years to come. Moving forward, we're broadening our focus to include different vehicle types, while actively attracting top talent worldwide to showcase their mettle.”

On the sidelines of the main event, the A2RL STEM Challenge for high-school and undergrad students between the ages of 14 and 21 drew the participation of 18 local schools, in addition to an international entry from the Boys and Girls Club from Southeastern Michigan, to showcase their knowledge, skills, and innovation by racing 1:8 scale autonomous cars. The winner of the A2RL STEM Challenge was Heriot-Watt University.

A2RL pioneered the integration of mixed and virtual reality elements for the first time in autonomous racing. It gave each of the eight finalist teams a unique avatar persona and incorporated state-of-the-art Virtual Reality (VR) technology ahead of F1 implementation, igniting enthusiastic fan experience both online and offline. Fans at the event in Yas Marina Circuit got to enjoy insightful STEM workshops, intriguing VR challenges, Gran Turismo simulators, doodle cars, and a Raceum AI Museum, among other activities. The inaugural event concluded with a spectacular display of fireworks and drones, illuminating the iconic Yas Marina Circuit.

A2RL 2024 was successfully supported by ADNOC as Title Sponsor, and leading partners, including Du, DMT, AWS, and Mubadala, who played pivotal roles in shaping the event’s trajectory.

Details of the eight participating teams and other updates can be found at A2RL.io.

I Squared Capital Partners Japanese Investors To Fast-track India’s Energy Transition

KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 (Bernama) -- I Squared Capital, an independent global infrastructure investor, announced a consortium of Japanese investors will become strategic minority shareholders in the Natural Gas Transition Platform (the Platform), a Singapore-based holding company with investments in Indian city gas distribution networks.

According to I Squared Capital in a statement, the transaction will diversify the Platform’s shareholder base and bring in additional long-term capital from the consortium members.

“We are very pleased to attract these long-term and experienced partners to our growing energy Platform. The additional capital provided will be used to support the energy transition in India through the expansion of last-mile city gas distribution infrastructure.

“We regard natural gas as a transitional energy source that will play an important role in global decarbonisation, substituting for more polluting fuels such as diesel and coal, while at the same time supporting India’s urbanisation and industrialisation with stable and affordable energy,” said I Squared Capital Senior Partner, APAC, Harsh Agrawal.

The Platform has active investments in last-mile city gas distribution businesses, including THINK Gas and AG&P Pratham. Together, these companies are developing city gas infrastructure across 19 geographical areas covering 325,000 square kilometres and serving over 85 million people.

Through the use of new infrastructure developed over the last four years, including over 9,000 kilometres of low-pressure gas pipelines, 30 Liquefied Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) and compressed gas stations and over 430 CNG stations, the Platform will serve millions of vehicles per day and thousands of commercial and industrial users by 2030.

In addition to gas distribution, the Platform will increase investments to boost the consumption of renewable natural gas (biogas) in India, as it is already one of the largest procurers of the country’s biogas and aims to procure about five million tonnes over the next 25 years.

This will support the Indian government’s vision to increase the consumption of biogas, generate employment at the local level, and reduce pollution from crop burning, in addition  to also looking to increase the use of green hydrogen using the city gas network.

In the future, the Platform will continue to introduce global best practices, industry-leading technology and best-in-class social and governance practices across the natural gas value chain in India.

AMOGY JOINS FORCES WITH THE MARITIME AND PORT AUTHORITY OF SINGAPORE AND PARTNERS TO ESTABLISH FUTURE FUELS TRAINING HUB FOR MARITIME WORKFORCE

SINGAPORE, April 15 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- Amogy, a provider of mature, scalable, and efficient ammonia-to-power solutions, on the Opening Day of Singapore Maritime Week 2024 has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and other collaborators to develop a Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF) to train maritime professionals in operating ships powered by alternative fuel systems.

The LOI to establish the METF was signed by the MPA and 22 partners, including international organizations, engine makers, classification societies, trade associations, unions, and institutes of higher learning. The establishment of a training facility follows a recommendation put forth by the Tripartite Advisory Panel, formed in early 2023. This panel aims to identify emerging and future skills and competencies needed to build the maritime workforce of the future.

The METF will be a decentralized facility based in Singapore, utilizing the various partners’ assets and training technologies to train global seafarers in the use, manning, and operation of vessels powered by zero or near-zero emission technologies.

With hundreds of crew changes conducted daily in Singapore, the METF's establishment is strategically positioned to support vessel operators and ship management companies with their crew training needs as part of their crew change arrangements. This approach is expected to result in significant time and training cost savings for the shipping community by utilizing the METF's training facilities. When fully operational, the METF is anticipated to benefit around 10,000 maritime personnel, including seafarers, from now to the 2030s.

“We are thrilled to embark on this exciting and important project in partnership with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and other esteemed collaborators,” says Seonghoon Woo, CEO at Amogy. “This initiative showcases Singapore's leadership in driving sustainable maritime solutions and underscores our commitment to advancing ammonia as a clean energy source for maritime shipping and equipping the global maritime workforce with the necessary skills to navigate the future of shipping.”

China's First Batch Of Imported Washed Feather And Down Cleared Customs In Guangxi

Guigang Customs staff are inspecting the goods.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 (Bernama) -- A shipment of approximately 18.5 tonnes of washed white duck feathers imported by Jialu Feather Products Co Ltd through Qinzhou Port passed customs inspection smoothly after joint supervision by Qinzhou Port Customs and Guigang Customs on March 28.

This shipment marked the successful implementation of the General Administration of Customs' pilot reform of imported washed feather and down customs clearance supervision in Guigang, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

"The goods were shipped from overseas to Guigang and cleared customs in just eight days. This new model is 17 days faster than the traditional customs clearance via Hong Kong, significantly reducing time and economic costs!" said the company’s General Manager in Guigang, Yang Chaodong.

Meanwhile, Secretary of the Gangnan District Committee of Guigang City, Tao Jianquan introduced that the down industry is a traditional advantageous industry in the Gangnan District of Guigang.

There are currently 170 feather and down processing enterprises, processing approximately 90,000 tonnes of feathers and down per year, accounting for about 28 per cent of China's total feather and down processing volume and 18 per cent of the world's total.

In recent years, Guigang has seized the opportunities of the construction of the Western Land-Sea Corridor, implemented a three-year action plan for industrial transformation and upgrading, in a bid to optimise the business environment and promote the upgrading of the down industry.

As a result, a complete industry chain from primary feather sorting and processing to washed feather and down processing and down product processing has taken shape.

In 2023, the total output value of the down industry in the Gangnan District of Guigang reached 4.7 billion Chinese yuan, according to the Publicity Department of Gangnan District in a statement. (100 Chinese yuan = RM65.90)

However, about 40 per cent of the raw materials need to be imported from abroad, with an annual import demand of 30,000 to 50,000 tonnes.

In order to support the upgrading and development of the down industry in Guangxi, the General Administration of Customs recently issued a pilot reform plan for imported washed feather and down customs clearance supervision, aiming to leverage the supervision resource advantages of Qinzhou Port, Guigang Port, and local customs to optimise the customs clearance supervision operation mode for imported washed feather and down.
