SIGNING OF MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE MALAYSIAN URBAN DESIGN ASSOCIATION (PEREKABANDAR) AND THE INDONESIAN INSTITUTE OF URBAN DESIGNERS (IARKI)

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- On this historic day, a memorandum of understanding between the Malaysian Urban Design Association (PEREKABANDAR) and the Indonesian Institute of Urban Designers (IARKI) will be signed at 6 pm at the Bizpod, Level 2, Block E, Taylors University Lakeside Campus. The memorandum focusses on the aspirations of both parties in fostering a close collaboration as strategic partners in this region and at international level based on two thrusts. The first is developing programs that dwell upon providing training and skills development such as symposiums, workshops, Master Class Series and forums/discourse. The second is to create greater awareness of urban design by organizing competitions, research, study trips etc that will benefit both parties.

IARKI is the professional body and representative of the urban design profession in Indonesia through certification, education and dissemination of knowledge in Urban Design. It also provides training and development program for its members as well as training programs that can attract the general public in engaging with educational programs relating to Urban Design. The approach by IARKI in urban design practice is reflected through its collaboration with other professional bodies like the architects, landscape architects and other stake holders as well as the communities that are involved with the development of the urban areas at the local and national levels.

The Malaysian Urban Design Association (PEREKABANDAR) has a slightly more challenging mission as urban design is not given enough emphasis in the planning and development of the urban areas in the country. PEREKABANDAR becomes the champion to create public awareness of the importance of Urban Design in Malaysia in creating sustainable development. The main focus is awareness campaign and improving the understanding of the best urban design practice in the local context, achievable through its knowledge dissemination platforms such as Urban Talks, forums, webinars, website and blogs. PEREKABANDAR also offers advice and expert points of views on current issues related to Urban Design to the general public through the press, radio, television and social media. PEREKABANDAR is ready to engage in a formal advisory role to government agencies and local authorities to improve the delivery of the development plans, national policy formulation and projects of public interest in enhancing the character and identity of the urban areas in Malaysia.

The MOU between the two parties having a common vision is expected to be the catalyst in improving the quality of the design of the urban areas with identity in the Nusantara region, an eye opener for both local and international audience towards the importance of Urban Design that is responsive to the local features, local climate and local people, whilst meeting the needs of the users and developing sense of pride for the people in the two countries.

This Memorandum is effective on the date of signing on 29th July 2022 and will be enforced for five years.

BLACK & VEATCH EBOOK HIGHLIGHTS OPPORTUNITIES FOR NATURAL GAS TO HASTEN ASIA'S ENERGY TRANSITION

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 (Bernama) -- Black & Veatch in its new eBook, Natural Gas: An Energy Transition Fuel for Asia, highlighted opportunities for innovation and lowering energy system emissions.

These opportunities include production and supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to fuel the generation of electric power through turbine technology and the development of alternative sustainable fuels such as hydrogen.

According to a statement, the eBook illustrates how cost efficiencies can be achieved by planning through the entire current and future natural gas value chain.

“To accommodate increased variable renewable generation, deploying integrated solutions, including gas-fired generation, will be critical to stabilise regional grids and enhance their resilience,” said Black & Veatch’s Executive Vice President & Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Narsingh Chaudhary.

Chaudhary added that while both wind and solar power help address clean energy by replacing fossil energy with zero-emission electricity, in the near-term as energy storage technologies evolve, a mix of generation solutions is the best course of action.

In the eBook, Black & Veatch energy experts assess opportunities to monetise gas fields from early-stage commercial modelling of bankable projects through to the schedule and modularity advantages of building floating LNG infrastructure.

It details how holistic project planning can present opportunities to co-locate and integrate LNG receiving terminals alongside gas-fired power plants as well as other off-takers of ‘cold energy’ including data centres through to refrigeration facilities, while also designing for the longer-term combustion of carbon-emissions-free green hydrogen at gas-fired power facility.

Black & Veatch is a 100-per cent employee-owned global engineering, procurement, consulting and construction company with a more than 100-year track record of innovation in sustainable infrastructure.

TAYLOR'S TRIUMPHS WITH 16 GOLD MEDALS FOR INNOVATIVE E-LEARNING

SUBANG JAYA, July 22 (Bernama) -- Taylor’s has recently won 16 Gold medals for its e-Learning innovations at the 2022 edition International University Carnival on e-Learning (IUCEL2022) organised by the Ministry of Higher Education. The varsity placed the second highest at the virtual event after this year’s hosting institution, Universiti Putra Malaysia, which won 20 Gold medals.

Additionally, Taylor’s took home 25 Silver and 7 Bronze medals awarded to academics from both Taylor’s University and Taylor’s College.

Senior Lecturer and Programme Director for Master of Laws programmes at Taylor’s Law School (TLS), Puteri Sofia Amirnuddin, won a Gold medal for her ‘Personalising Virtual Learning for Law Students Through Interactive Video Branching in a Post Pandemic World’ product.

According to Puteri Sofia, the integration of interactive video branching goes beyond uploading recorded lectures. It features interactive and personalised elements to ensure that students attain the microlearning outcomes for each subtopic. After watching an assigned video and attaining the relevant learning outcomes for the subtopic, the subsequent one will be unlocked, failing which the previous video will automatically replay.

“At TLS, we embrace the concept of ‘active learning’ to inculcate higher-order thinking skills amongst our law students. This method prevents memory decay as the duration of each 'branch' video is between 5-10 minutes, providing students with the opportunities to absorb and reflect on the information shared to learn another aspect of the law,” she explained.

Another Gold medal was awarded to Director of The Me.Reka Makerspace (TMM), Mike Choong. Previously participating in IUCEL2021, he collaborated with fellow Taylor’s academics Puteri Sofia Amirnuddin and Razif Mohamed to present their ‘Gamifying virtual delivery of law modules using Lawleypop app’ product.

Consumers considering wider variety of brands when deciding to buy -- NielsenIQ study

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- Inflation has supercharged the importance of every investment and strategic effort made by smaller brands, said NielsenIQ Thought Leadership global director Lauren Fernandes.

She said as the cost of products rises, so does the cost of missing the mark with consumers’ expectations.

“The good news for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) is that despite many SMBs being largely 'unfamiliar' in terms of notoriety according to our recent study, consumers are considering a wider variety of brands when deciding what to buy,” she said in a statement in conjunction with the release of a new report.

NielsenIQ, a global information services company, is previewing findings from the Brand Balancing Act, a global study providing a perspective on how consumers perceive small and medium-sized brands in the new inflationary marketplace.

The findings revealed that amid supply chain challenges, inflationary pressures, and cautious consumer spending intentions, small brands face a challenging playing field.

By focusing on consumer brand preferences, performance benchmarking, trend-cycle timing, and meaningful differentiation, small and medium brands can leverage consumer responses of the volatile economy to their benefit.

NielsenIQ said large corporations have leverage against inflation and supply chain problems that smaller enterprises often struggle to weather, making the balancing act for SMBs a crucial, but potentially rewarding effort at this specific point in time.

The analysis also highlighted that among others, 56 per cent of global consumers prefer to buy locally made products from small businesses in their area; 57 percent try to support small brands where possible, but are finding it harder to find them on the shelf; and 51 per cent feel that small brands are more authentic and trustworthy than big brands.

NielsenIQ delivers the gold standard in consumer and retail measurement, through the most connected, complete, and actionable understanding of the evolving global, omnichannel consumer.

ENTERPRISES IN SINGAPORE, MALAYSIA ADOPTING CLOUD COMPUTING AT RAPID PACE - ISG REPORT

KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Bernama) -- Enterprises in Singapore and Malaysia are adopting cloud computing at a rapid pace, motivated by the growth in digital transformation and other trends in the region.

This is according to a new research report published today by Information Services Group (ISG), a leading global technology research and advisory firm.

The 2022 ISG Provider Lens Next-Gen Private/Hybrid Cloud — Data Centre Services & Solutions report for Singapore and Malaysia finds an increasingly developed market for data centre services and solutions in the region, with both global and local providers growing strongly.

The rising demand for cloud products and services is linked to several enterprise information technology (IT) trends in the region, including growing needs for automation, sustainability and edge computing, the report said.

Both service providers and clients are quickly adopting platforms to automate cloud operations using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, ISG said in a statement.

A major push for sustainability by both the public and private sectors in Singapore, likely to spread to Malaysia, is shaping companies’ decisions about data centre locations, energy sources and service providers.

For regulatory, cultural and geopolitical reasons, Singapore and Malaysia operate as separate markets for cloud solutions and services, so few providers have coverage in both countries.

ISG expects providers to accelerate the creation of complex partnerships for national coverage, global connectivity and scale.

In Malaysia, data centre development is expected to move beyond Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya district to other locations with cheap and reliable energy and proximity to Singapore.

The global shortage of IT skills is a particular challenge in both countries, with technology unemployment at or near record lows and immigration reduced due to COVID-19, the report said, adding this crisis will require more investment in automation and a rethinking of how to fill the skills gap.

The 2022 ISG Provider Lens Next-Gen Private/Hybrid Cloud — Data Centre Services & Solutions report for Singapore and Malaysia evaluates the capabilities of 32 providers across three quadrants: Managed Services, Managed Hosting and Colocation Services.
