GLOBAL HEALTHCARE LEADERS ADVANCE SECTOR DECARBONISATION, ACCELERATING TRANSITION TO NET ZERO

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- Global healthcare leaders from the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) Health Systems Task Force are in advanced discussions with energy providers in China and India to scale renewable power across their supply chains and accelerate the transition to net zero health systems.

This is the first time that companies from across the global healthcare sector, including AstraZeneca, GSK, Novo Nordisk, and Roche have come together to pioneer such initiatives in these countries.

According to a statement, China and India are key markets for pharmaceuticals manufacturing, estimated to account for up to 50 per cent of materials for medicines.

AstraZeneca Chief Executive Officer and Chair of the Sustainable Markets Initiative Health Systems Task Force, Pascal Soriot said: “The world has finally woken up to the reality that the climate crisis is also a health crisis.

“With this realisation must follow bold, scalable action if we are to secure a liveable and sustainable future. Today’s announcement sends a positive demand signal for green power, providing a blueprint for others to follow, and underlines the SMI’s commitment to leading the decarbonisation of the healthcare sector.”

In China, the power agreements would unlock renewable energy in Jiangsu, Guangdong, Shanghai and Beijing, set to bring around 70 megawatts (MW) of renewable power annually to the grid from 2024 onwards, while, in India, the initiative aims to support suppliers in Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

These collective efforts to progress renewable energy access, demonstrate the power of collaboration at scale in these markets, and the convening power of the SMI.

Beyond supply chain decarbonisation, SMI Health Systems Task Force members are spurring progress to reduce the environmental footprint of healthcare delivery, which accounts for nearly half of the sector’s global emissions.

An international measurement framework is also being developed to calculate the carbon emissions from different patient care pathways, aiming to identify the major drivers of emissions and ultimately reduce the environmental impact of healthcare delivery.

The group is also examining how to quantify the carbon emissions of clinical trials. In addition, a new workstream, led by consumer goods maker Reckitt, will focus on the role consumer health and wellbeing can play in decarbonising the healthcare sector.

Since the launch of the Task Force in 2021, suppliers and leading healthcare companies have been inspired to contribute to its efforts, demonstrating its broader positive influence across the sector, and recently welcomed three new members, namely, Reckitt, Novartis and Bupa.

ABU DHABI’S ATRC NEW AI COMPANY OFFERS DECENTRALISED DATA CONTROL OPTIONS

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) has launched its new artificial intelligence (AI) company, AI71, making yet another bold stride in an era of rapid advancements across AI.

According to ATRC in a statement, the entity builds on the Technology Innovation Institute’s (TII) Falcon generative AI models and will focus on multi-domain specialisations while offering unprecedented AI data control options for companies and countries looking to self-host for greater privacy.

The new AI powerhouse was launched by the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Abu Dhabi Executive Council Chairman, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in the presence of several ministers and representatives of leading multinational technology companies.

Through partnerships and collaborations, AI71 will enable clients to deploy its AI models and benefit from access to sophisticated data reservoirs to ensure outstanding generative AI performance.

More importantly, AI71 will enable decentralised data ownership, allowing clients to retain control of their own data, and this offering will set new standards for privacy and security, serving as a differentiator for AI projects where data sovereignty is critical.

The first of AI71’s cutting-edge specialisations will have a medical focus and seek to transform capabilities in diagnosis and decision-making, significantly changing the accuracy and time spent on each patient, while the educational and legal sectors are also to gain value from AI integration and enhancements, impacting each domain with nuanced benefits that lead to new solutions to support societal development.

As AI71 makes an impact across enterprises, industries, and governments, VentureOne will introduce new specialisations to meet growing demand from various sectors.

TEN AND ONWARDS!

The Asia Corporate Excellence and Sustainability Awards (ACES) marks decade with further inroads towards sustainable growth and transformative changes.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 (Bernama) -- In a business world of superegos and greenwashing the Asia Corporate Excellence and Sustainability Awards (ACES) has led the charge for greater accountability in leadership and sustainability reporting for the past nine years. This year the ACES turns ten, and recommits to its mission of bringing to greater prominence the leaders making positive industry and employee-wide changes in their organizations, as well as turning a spotlight on to corporations with stellar ESG and sustainability accomplishments.

In this milestone year the ACES received its most number of submissions to date, with 580 would-be nominees from the melting pot of Asian business vying for a mention at the Awards. The 580 submissions were from over 52 industries from 15 countries, which was a testimony to the positive reach of the ACES. After an expansive, thorough, and unbiased review process, there emerged 82 winners across 21 categories from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laos, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Topping the list of winners was Philippines, with 23 winners, followed by Malaysia with 15 winners. The roll of honour at this year’s ACES included Somphote Ahunai, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Energy Absolute Public Company Limited for Entrepreneur of the Year, Nisa Ismail, Chief Executive Officer, SEDANIA As Salam Capital Sdn Bhd as Woman Entrepreneur of the Year, and Hoe Kian Choon, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, CUCKOO International (MAL) Sdn Bhd as Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Ayala Corporations was named Asia’s Most Sustainable Company of the Year.

Far from the mere bestowing of laurels on winners, the ACES has made it a mission to go beyond award presentations, and move into the sphere of public policy. Its contribution to corporate and sustainable advocacy comes into play via the triumvirate of the ACES Council, ACES Institute and Goeman Bind.

The ACES Council comprises of five visionary corporate and thought leaders whose world view helped shape the ACES Awards. They are international corporate lawyer, author and public policy advocate Hemant K. Batra; Dr Jayanthi Desan, former Executive Director of the Malaysian Centre of Regulatory Studies, University Malaya; Harvard graduate and FDI consultant James John Ku; Luis Bueno Nieto, CEO and Founder of Naterial Concept; and Shanggari B, Chief Executive Officer of MORS Group and Asian business market development specialist. The ACES Council uses their individual and collective expertise to gather individuals to further the cause of the ACES Institute.

The ACES Institute is the vanguard of Asia’s sustainable growth, with its prime objective being the igniting of progress through research, expert insights, standards, and strategic alliances. Committed towards the raising of Asia’s business potential, the ACES Institute is leading the charge in fostering economic prosperity, equality, and environmental development through dialogue, information sharing, and the exchange of insights by successful corporate thought leaders, bodies and think tanks.

The ACES Institute consists of an assembly of noteworthy experts who believe in ambitious change within the corporate world. The ACES Institute seeks to unite stakeholders in meaningful ways by dialogue and leadership programs and initiatives which address critical issues of the corporate world, foster collaborations among key stakeholders, and propel innovation.

Adding critical insights and knowledge of the diaspora to the coalition is Goeman Bind HTO, a non-profit international development, public policy, and law research think-tank headquartered in India. Goeman Bind has recently become a part of the ACES Institute as a Center of Excellence, sharing its access to eminent academicians and intellectuals from across the globe who believe in the cruciality of sustainability, and the importance of knowledge sharing. The ACES Goeman Bind Center of Excellence will serve as a knowledge hub, nurturing a culture of learning and enriching the discourse within the ACES community.

The combined experience of the three bodies is already seeing its first fruits by way of the inaugural ACES Summit. The ACES Summit, which took place on 23 November 2023, a day before the ACES Awards, was held at the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur.

Themed “Actioning Asean’s ESG: A Vision for Sustainable Progress,” the Summit provided a unique platform for business leaders, sustainability advocates and thought leaders to explore and debate strategies for transformative actions to achieve an equitable, resilient and sustainable future for business and generations to come. The one-day event featured ACES Council member, Dr Jayanthi Desan, together with ACES Awards past winner Niko Safavi, Chief Executive Officer of PT Mowilex under whose direction the organization was named Best Managed Company in Indonesia by Deloitte.

Other ACES Summit Core Members included Marla Garin-Alvarez, Vice President & Head, Sustainability Office, Compliance Group, BDO Unibank; Eric Roberto M. Luchangco, Chief Sustainability Officer, and  Head of Strategy and Finance of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), another ACES Awards winner; and Laura Canas da Costa, Senior Global Policy Expert, United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI).

The high-level discussions included sessions on technology and innovation (Circular Business Models and Reinventing Supply Chain Decarbonization), financing and investment (Climate Financing for Positive Change, Navigating Impact Investing in Asia), and human capital (Future of Social & Community Impact).

This by-invitation only Summit targeted representatives or owners of businesses who are interested in advancing efforts towards achieving net-zero emissions, and individuals passionate about driving Asia's responsible business agenda.

CEO of MORS Group and President of the ACES Awards and ACES Council, Shanggari B believes that the longevity of the ACES Awards is testament to the number of corporate leaders who are aware that changes must be made to the way businesses are governed and run. “More than ever there is an increasing belief in the corporate sector that with great power comes great responsibility. It is no longer enough for businesses to turn a profit. Societally-aware business leaders now know that they are being appraised not just by their Boards, but also by consumers of their brand’s products or services. With consumers becoming more aware, purchases are now subject to a consumer’s scrutiny of a brand, the organization behind it, and how it treats its employees, as well as the way it sources raw materials and produces its products. We live in an era of accountability, and the ACES Awards is one of the best gauges of accountability,” she stresses.

ACES Awards winners thus far have collectively generated over US$361 billion in revenue, emphasizing the financial viability of sustainability-driven businesses. Their commitment to ESG principles has also led to a significant decrease in waste production as well as carbon emissions, and a commendable increase in the utilization of renewable energy sources. ACES winners have brought transformative changes across 52 over industries, and provided employment to over a million individuals.

“We have been around for ten years and have tracked these numbers over those ten years. Our evidence is irrefutable: good leadership and sustainability initiatives can and do work. Our goal for the next ten years to come is to keep amplifying this message aided by our past winners, ACES Institute and more ACES Summits,” concludes the dynamic Chief Executive.

Stand firstThe inaugural ACES Summit 2023 provides a unique platform for delegates to advance transformative actions and achieve an equitable, resilient and sustainable future for business and generations to come

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- Major transformation in the areas of climate, food and circularity needs to happen in order to address environmental, social and governance (ESG) in an era of uncertainty now.

ACES Council member Dr Jayanthi Desan said actioning on ESG should be based on the multiple challenges in 2024 including slowing macro-economic growth and geopolitical effects.

“In climate we have been on this journey for multiple years and now is the time that investments need to be made to drive down decarbonise technologies to companies committing to scope 1 and 2 emissions.

“In the area of food, clearly it needs healthy, sustainable and economically viable food systems and we are very far from that. How to create the right investments towards that?” said Jayanthi in her keynote address at the inaugural ACES Summit 2023.

Jayanthi who is also Managing Partner of Aubrens, said that the third area, circularity, which needs addressing, is a key strategy to embrace as a concept namely sustainable supply chain, material, design new material that uses less resources and energy.

“If we do that, we can make a difference on all areas. We are optimistic to meet the moment, in fact, each one of you are creating the moment.

“We can actually make a progress. It’s our responsibility as leaders of our organisations and our planet to make a difference whilst we still have time and I look forward to our discussions today that will delve further into the solutions we are seeking,” she added.

How to address today’s environmental and social challenges with steward leadership

SINGAPORE, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- Stewardship Asia Centre (SAC) is pleased to announce that “Sustainable Sustainability: Why ESG Is Not Enough,” published by Penguin Random House, will be available for purchase from 21 November 2023.

Authored by SAC’s chief executive officer and Wall Street Journal and Amazon bestselling author Rajeev Peshawaria, the book discusses the limitations of ESG, a framework largely based on rules, incentives, reporting and measurement. It emphasises the need for steward leadership to create a win-win-win future for stakeholders, society, and the environment and offers a practical, step-by-step playbook for any commercial entity that wants to succeed at marrying profit and purpose.

The print edition will be available on Amazon Singapore on 21 November 2023, and the e- book will be available globally on 28 November 2023. The global print edition is slated for late January 2024.

“To address today’s existential challenges, we need innovation of the highest order, and innovation can neither be legislated nor driven by extrinsic incentives alone,” said Mr Peshawaria. “We need a values-driven revolution with steward leadership at the core to drive a win-win-win future for stakeholders, society and the environment.”

The book has received advance praise. “Sustainable Sustainability is a must-read for anyone interested in turning a vision into meaningful action. Rajeev provides a compelling argument for genuine stewardship and offers practical steps for businesses. The recommendations are backed by extensive research and inspiring real-world examples—making it all real,” said Ahmed Mazhari, President of Microsoft Asia.

Paul Polman, the former CEO of Unilever and the author of Net Positive, said, “This is not a crisis of climate change, inequality, or food security. Many will argue that this is a crisis of greed, apathy, and selfishness. Sustainable Sustainability shines a light, with some practical examples, on what it takes to be a leader in today’s world.”

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) marked a special milestone at its Annual Roundtable conference (RT2023), to reflect on nearly two decades of impact made possible via the collaborative efforts of its members and partners.

Themed “Partners for the Next 20”, the RT2023 presented an opportunity to take unified action on the core challenges facing the sustainable palm oil industry, including mitigating climate change, increasing uptake of certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO), and protecting labour rights.

RSPO Chief Executive Officer, Joseph D’Cruz in his opening remarks said through nearly two decades of voluntary action, its members have banded together to raise the bars of sustainability within the industry.

“The impact we have collectively achieved is increasingly being acknowledged by stakeholders outside our industry, and we are seeing a definite shift in the sustainable palm oil narrative in our favour,” he added.

In a statement, RSPO highlighted its key achievements over the last two decades, including the increase in global certified area from just 125,000 hectares in 2008 to 4.9 million hectares across 23 countries this year.

VISION SPACE OPTOMETRIST 'EYES' SLOWER MYOPIA PROGRESSION IN OVER 400 KIDS, THANKS TO ORTHO-K

Woon Pak Seong, Director and Optometrist of Vision Space Optometrist says Ortho-K is suitable for both myopia management as well as those who seek active lifestyles without glasses or contact lenses.

PETALING JAYA, Nov 14 (Bernama) -- Vision Space Optometrist, the preferred Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) provider with certified children myopia (shortsightedness) management experts, is looking forward to seeing slower progression in the over 400 Ortho-K kids they are managing.  They cautioned that the prevalence of children experiencing increments of more than 1.00D in myopia a year is growing; and this is cause for concern in children’s eye health.  According to a study published during the pandemic, its 10-year analysis highlighted that from 2010 to 2020 the prevalence of myopia increased 9.75% from 40.90% to 50.65%. The greatest increment was seen from 2019 (pre-COVID) to 2020 (COVID) contributing 1.25% of the total increment. This could be attributed to the increased use of devices due to online learning and gaming, lack of outdoor activities, and other environmental factors.

According to Woon Pak Seong, Director and Optometrist of Vision Space Optometrist, “A normal progression of myopia would be zero to <-0.50 D a year. Any increment from <-0.75 D is considered high increase in myopia and parents should take immediate measures to slow down shortsightedness.” He added, “We are very fortunate because the FDA-approved Ortho-K technology is now available, and this is an effective treatment to slow down myopia progression. Ortho-K is a non-surgical method for correcting myopia by wearing specially designed gas-permeable contact lenses overnight. These lenses temporarily reshape the cornea, allowing for clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses.”

It is important that Ortho-K be fitted by a qualified optometrist as the lenses are custom-made based on the unique eye shape and prescription. Eye care professionals can take precise measurements and design the lenses to provide optimal myopia control and vision correction.

“Here at Vision Space Optometrist, we first provide a comprehensive eye examination to determine if the candidate is suitable for Ortho-K. Then, our eye care professionals will evaluate the candidate’s eye health, prescription, and other factors to ensure that Ortho-K is the right option,” Woon emphasized. “We also ensure that the lenses fit correctly and provide guidance on lens care and maintenance, and follow-up with regular appointments to monitor progress and to adjust as needed.”
