Nation’s First-of-its-Kind Endometriosis Scientific Workshop Aims to Improve the Quality of Life for Malaysian Women

From left: Prof. Dr. Prasanna, Prof. Katy Vincent, Prof. J. Ravichandran, Dr. Hannah Nazri, Prof. Christian Becker, Ms Lakshmi Menon, CEO of Thomson Fertility Malaysia, Prof. Krina Zondervan, Prof. Beverley Vollenhoven and Dr. Thomas Tapmeier, speakers from Monash University Malaysia, University of Warwick and University of Oxford.

PETALING JAYA, June 5 (Bernama) -- Thomson Fertility (also known as TMC Fertility), in collaboration with Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara (THKD) and Monash University Australia, hosted the Holistic Endometriosis Care Scientific Workshop, a landmark event in advancing women’s health in Malaysia.

Held at THKD, the workshop brought together leading experts from the University of Oxford’s Endometriosis CaRe Centre, Monash University (Malaysia & Australia), and University of Warwick. It focused on addressing the complex management of endometriosis, a chronic condition affecting 1 in 10 Malaysian women. Endometriosis can cause severe pain and impair fertility in women.

Themed “Holistic Endometriosis Care – From Bench to Bedside”, the workshop aimed to enhance awareness, improve diagnostics, and promote multidisciplinary care starting at the primary healthcare level. It also emphasised the strong link between endometriosis and infertility.

In her opening remarks, Ms Lakshmi Menon, CEO of Thomson Fertility, highlighted the organisation’s broader mission in women’s health:

“Empowering primary care providers is key to ensuring women get the right diagnosis early, especially when endometriosis is so closely linked with fertility struggles. Together with our international partners, we aim to transform the future of women’s care in Malaysia.”

The event showcased research and practices to improve diagnosis, pain relief, and long-term care. Topics included:

· Oxford’s clinical models improving outcomes in the UK
· Early diagnosis and the role of GPs in managing chronic pelvic pain
· Updates on the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) guidelines
· Fertility preservation and the impact of untreated endometriosis on reproductive health

Prof. Dr. Prasanna Supramaniam, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Thomson Fertility and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, University of Oxford, said:

“This is the first workshop of its kind in Malaysia, and it’s time we addressed the reality that many women suffer in silence. Pain is not normal, and primary care doctors are our first line of defence. This initiative is part of our long-standing commitment to endometriosis education, awareness, and fertility support.”

Prof. Christian Becker, Lead of the Oxford BSGE Endometriosis Centre, added:

“Endometriosis remains underdiagnosed globally. I’m honoured to share our research and see Thomson Fertility take a leadership role in improving care pathways in this region.”

Adding a Malaysian perspective, Prof. J. Ravichandran, Senior Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Johor Bahru, said:

“Endometriosis is an enigmatic disease. Many women live through cycles of pain, ineffective medication, and repeat surgeries due to delayed or inadequate treatment. There is an urgent need for better data and early intervention strategies to optimise care.”

To further support awareness, Thomson Fertility has launched Endo Care @ Thomson, a monthly initiative offering public education sessions on the first Saturday of every month. These sessions provide expert talks and aim to break the silence around menstrual health, helping more women access timely care.

The seamless coordination between primary care and A&E departments enhances patient outcomes and system efficiency

KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 (Bernama) -- IHH Healthcare Malaysia, a leading private healthcare provider with a network of 18 hospitals nationwide, has successfully rolled out a series of Accident & Emergency (A&E) Collaboration events with General Practitioners (GPs) across the Central, Northern, and Southern regions, reinforcing the role of GPs as frontline partners in emergency care.

This initiative highlights IHH Healthcare Malaysia’s commitment to deliver timely, high-quality care by fostering stronger, seamless coordination between primary care providers and hospital emergency teams across its network, which includes Gleneagles Hospitals, Island Hospital, Pantai Hospitals, Prince Court Medical Centre and Timberland Medical Centre.

To operationalise this collaboration, IHH Healthcare Malaysia has implemented several key measures to enhance patient safety, streamline A&E referrals and optimise continuity of care:

· Timely Patient Updates for GPs – GPs will receive timely clinical updates on patients referred to A&E departments across IHH Healthcare Malaysia’s hospitals, ensuring continuity of care and informed follow-up management.

· Direct Access to A&E Teams – Dedicated phone lines will allow GPs to connect directly with A&E teams for urgent referrals, enabling prompt decision-making and early intervention.

· Seamless Two-Way Communication – Structured communication channels between GPs and A&E departments will ensure smoother patient clinical handovers, real-time updates and coordinated care delivery.

· GP Masterclasses & Practical Sessions – Expert-led sessions will equip GPs with up- to-date clinical skills in emergency care, including ENT emergencies, fracture recognition, suturing techniques and ECG interpretation.

· Basic Life Support (BLS) Training – To boost pre-hospital emergency readiness, GPs and their teams will receive training in CPR, AED and essential emergency response.

The inaugural events saw participation from GPs representing over 130 clinics across Malaysia, demonstrating strong interest and commitment from the primary care community in enhancing emergency response capabilities.

Jean-François Naa, CEO of IHH Healthcare Malaysia, said, “Primary care is the foundation of a resilient healthcare system, and GPs are often the first point of contact for patients. Through this collaboration, we are strengthening that vital role – ensuring GPs have direct access, streamlined referral pathways and timely clinical support when patients need hospital care. Our goal is to deliver comprehensive care at every stage of the patient journey, with seamless continuity from clinic to hospital and back.”

Dr. Jeewadas Baladas, Consultant Emergency Physician and Head of Emergency Services at IHH Healthcare Malaysia, said, “From pre-hospital care to A&E admission and beyond, every step in the patient journey is vital. Closer collaboration between GPs and our A&E teams ensures timely, evidence-based care for patients when clinically indicated. Our 18 A&E departments follow a standardised triaging system and clinical pathways, ensuring consistent, high-quality emergency care.”

The nationwide rollout of this collaboration marks a step forward in redefining emergency care delivery in Malaysia. By bridging the gap between GPs and emergency departments through timely access, structured communication and shared clinical responsibility, IHH Healthcare Malaysia is setting new standards for responsiveness, coordination, and excellence in patient care.

BOAO FORUM FOR ASIA’S ISTIF TO DEBUT IN HONG KONG THIS JUNE

KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 (Bernama) -- The International Science, Technology and Innovation Forum (ISTIF) of Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) will hold its inaugural session in Hong Kong from June 6 to 7, under the theme “Transitioning Towards the Future: Powered by Science and Technology Innovation”.

Jointly organised by the BFA and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, the forum will gather leading voices from government, industry and academia to discuss global trends and challenges in science and technology innovation.

The two-day forum will cover a broad range of forward-looking topics, including the global innovation ecosystem, international science and technology (sci-tech) governance, the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, innovation-industry integration, life sciences, artificial intelligence (AI), future mobility, and quantum technologies, according to a statement.

Established in 2019, the ISTIF of BFA serves as a key international platform for dialogue on scientific innovation and cooperation.

Previous editions held in Macao (2020), Guangzhou (2022), and Zhuhai (2023) have strengthened sci-tech collaboration in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, promoted technology transfer under the Belt and Road Initiative, and advanced AI governance on a global scale.

ISTIF of BFA in Hong Kong would reinforce the city’s position as a strategic connector between Mainland China and the world. Hong Kong’s growing capabilities in research and development, strong industrial base, and status as a global financial centre support its role in fostering technological innovation in the Greater Bay Area.

The 2025 forum also comes amid rapid global scientific and industrial transformation, raising concerns over data security, technological ethics, and privacy protection.

The event is expected to provide valuable perspectives on strengthening international sci-tech cooperation and building a more inclusive and robust global governance framework for innovation.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 (Bernama) -- Global credit rating agency, AM Best has withdrawn the financial strength rating of B+ (Good) and the long-term issuer credit rating of “bbb-” (Good) of Hong Kong’s Tugu Insurance Company Limited (TIC).
