SEGI ADDRESSES GLOBAL CHALLENGES IN APCCSID 2021

PETALING JAYA, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- SEGi University is partnering with the International Bureau of Education (IBE-UNESCO), Universiti Malaya (UM), Asia Pacific Research Association on Curriculum Studies (APRACSI), and Association of Professional in Curriculum and Educational Instruction (APROCEI) to host the Asia Pacific Conference on Curriculum Studies and Instructional Designing (APCCSID) next October 2021, in their effort to empower learners across all socio-economic backgrounds with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to address the 21st century interconnected global challenges.

With the theme Curriculum and Instructional Design for Sustainable Development, APCCSID 2021 aims at discussing the roles and impact of education towards achieving UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), counting inclusive education, values education, education for Sustainable Consumption and Production (ESCP), and global citizenship among many other as the critical enabler of all the other SDGs.

The International Conference will provide opportunities for collaboration of knowledge and experience across regions among academic scholars, policymakers, and practitioners in international settings while providing a platform for discussion and possible cooperation on curriculum studies and instructional designing at both lower and higher levels of educational institutions in Malaysia and regionally.

By bringing 25 keynote speakers and plenary speakers, and 12 forum panellists from across continents home in Malaysia, SEGi hopes to provide a rare opportunity for more Malaysians to raise their awareness in sustainability thinking as global citizens. SEGi hopes to be leading the way in ensuring education towards sustainable development pertinent to the survival of humanity.

“While sustainable thinking concerns the mindset of consistently maintaining and improving our well-being as a society, it also reveals that we do not inherit the world from our ancestors but borrow it from the next generation. Similarly, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a realisation that the current curriculum is not only for the current generation but also for the future generation,” said Datin Dr Ng Soo Boon, the Organising Chairperson of APCCSID 2021.

For the curriculum to be implemented well, teacher training is essential, and ongoing research is necessary. SEGi University Faculty of Education, Languages and Psychology can spearhead the Malaysian and regional education fraternity towards education for sustainable development through the teacher education programme both at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

As the world begins to address the unprecedented crises and disasters following the ‘Code Red for Humanity’ as reported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), SEGi University as the main organiser of APCCSID 2021, believes that curriculum will set the direction for educational transformation worldwide and at all levels of education to integrate one that is more sustainable for generations to come, through environmental realisation. A continuous synergy and concerted effort of APCCSID will be needed to smaller the gap between theory and practice.

In raising awareness among global citizens on the importance of sustainability thinking, APCSSID 2021 will help develop and implement a mission-driven curriculum. It emphasises the identification and adherence to sound and sustainable philosophy and principles in learning that could lead to students’ thinking and problem-solving skills in general.
