SEGI SUPPORTS THE NATIONAL COVID-19 IMMUNISATION PROGRAMME (PICK)

PETALING JAYA, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- More than one hundred students of a leading private higher education institution, SEGi University (Sibu Campus), have successfully registered as volunteers to support the government’s initiative in the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) at the National COVID-19 Vaccination Call Centre in Lanang Health Clinic Sibu, Sarawak.

Since coming out in full force as the healthcare partner of the recent industry immunisation campaign, the team has helped to vaccinate more than 10,000 people in Sibu within a few days of its operation. It was the most significant experience for participating specialist doctors, nurses and students as no satisfaction is greater than doing their part in the current crucial fight against COVID-19.

According to the Dean of the SEGi University Faculty of Medicine, Professor Dr Mohamad Raili bin Suhaili, they are now categorised as frontliners and have been vaccinated. Each individual has been trained to provide community-level support in managing calls to all scheduled vaccine recipients and answering any queries.

“Currently, our students are volunteering at the National COVID-19 Vaccination Call Centre and will be stationed in low-risk areas. We hope that our involvement will help mitigate the effort in treating COVID-19 patients and support the vaccination campaign to ensure that Malaysia achieves its target herd immunity by December,” said Prof Dr Raili.

The efforts and services of these volunteering students are hoped to increase the number of registrations for PICK, thus expediting vaccine distribution in Sarawak. “We are hoping that the efforts shown by our students will have a trickle-down effect in the implementation of Malaysia Vaccine Support Volunteers (MyVac),” added Prof. Dr Raili.

For quite a few years, Sibu Campus has been a medical training hub, with SEGi’s medical students attached there for their final three (3) years of their 5-year MBBS degree. SEGi’s main objective remains to bringing out ‘the best in you made possible’ via an innovative integrated curriculum focussing on educating students in a patient-centred, science-driven, team-based, and high-valued health care environment.

While the success of the Sibu Campus continues to inspire us, SEGi Clinic at SEGi University Kota Damansara has also been recognised as one of the Vaccine Administration Centres (PPVs) to help the government in their initiative of boosting the vaccination rate at the national level. SEGi Clinic Kota Damansara has begun operating as Industry PPV on 15 June, while SEGi Clinic Sibu on 24 June, and is entirely run by lecturers from the Faculty of Medicine, support staff, and medical students.

As one of the prestigious higher education institutions, SEGi has taken various steps in playing a significant role by aiding and working together with the government to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. SEGi students were also involved in the work of the SEGi-DUKE-CRC Laboratory to label and enter COVID-19 PCR test samples and data.

Our students were also involved in producing vaccine promotion videos to educate the public on the importance of vaccines to all walks of life. SEGi is proud to be allowed to contribute to society. “We are grateful and happy to be part of this historic initiative. It is this effort that will evidence Malaysian’s crusade against the COVID-19 pandemic,” added Prof. Dr Raili. He stressed that all parties must unite and carry out their responsibilities to the nation during these challenging times.
