ALBERTA FUNDS CCS KNOWLEDGE SHARING HUB, ADVANCING CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE PROJECTS

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) -- International CCS Knowledge Centre (Knowledge Centre) with foundational support from the Government of Alberta, will establish the world’s first open-source repository of knowledge and information on the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS/CCUS) projects.

As a key action item included in Alberta’s Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan released April 19, the Government of Alberta is providing support for the creation of a national CCS knowledge sharing hub that will be an important tool for Canada to meet its ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“Bringing large-scale CCS projects to life at the speed and scale that is required to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 requires unprecedented collaboration between industry, government, academia and other partners.

“We are very grateful to the Government of Alberta for stepping up with this critical support, allowing us to launch the CCS knowledge sharing hub and ensure lessons learned from dozens of CCS projects planned across Canada are documented and made available to anyone who can benefit from them.

“I would be remiss in not singling out the strong leadership of Environment and Protected Areas Minister Sonya Savage in helping to ensure this initiative moves forward,” said International CCS Knowledge Centre president and chief executive officer, James Millar in a statement.

The mandate of the CCS knowledge sharing hub will be to collect and curate best practices and lessons learned from Canadian CCS projects past, present and future to enhance the success of CCS projects and promote continuous learning and improvement in CCS technology.

Expansion of CCS is also a crucial step for creating and maintaining vital jobs in all heavy emitting sectors provincially and nationally in such areas as cement, iron and steel, power generation, petrochemicals, fertiliser, as well as oil and gas.

The CCS knowledge sharing hub will be developed and operated by the International CCS Knowledge Centre to assess and identify best practices and frameworks to get CCS projects to final investment decision.

Key to the initiative’s long-term success will be coordination and proactive promotion of the sharing of knowledge on CCS gathered from companies large and small to ensure the timely and efficient transfer of CCS best practices across Alberta, Canada and the globe, outcomes where industry and government jointly benefit.

Sharing critical information on the development of projects from study stage into operation will greatly increase the transfer of crucial learnings, leading to better outcomes and inevitably a greater level of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reductions in Canada.

ALBATROZ SECURES FUNDS TO DEVELOP THERAPEUTIC ANTIBODIES FOR CANCER, ARTHRITIS

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 (Bernama) -- Albatroz Therapeutics announced it has secured US$3 million in funding led by Outram Bio and SEEDS Capital to accelerate the development of therapeutic antibodies against a novel target that degrades the extracellular matrix, a key contributor to cancer and arthritis. (US$1=RM4.46)

The biotechnology company targeting tissue remodeling to stop cancer growth and treat arthritis, has secured exclusive rights on a highly specific and novel target that blocks tumour growth and recurrence, including a range of therapeutic antibodies that inhibit this target.

Albatroz Chief Executive Officer and Scientific Co-Founder, Dr Fred Bard said: “Degradation of the extracellular matrix is a critical component of both tumour growth and arthritis, however candidate drugs against this process have been limited in their use due to toxicity profiles.

“We are thrilled with the industry support that is allowing us to accelerate development of Albatroz’s novel therapeutic antibodies in order to move toward the clinic. We look forward to collaborating with pharmaceutical and biotech innovators in order to maximise the impact of this science.”

While at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore, Dr Bard published prominently on a pathway that controls protein glycosylation and drives extracellular matrix degradation.

The study of the GalNAc-T Activation (GALA) glycosylation pathway led to the discovery of a new target, which becomes exposed at the cell surface after glycosylation.

Activation of the target occurs specifically in tumours and arthritic synovial membranes, connective tissue that lines the joint capsule. Albatroz’s targeted antibodies have high specificity for this target selectively reducing extracellular matrix degradation while minimising toxicity.

In a statement, Albatroz Therapeutics said the company also received the first Golden Ticket prize from Amgen in Singapore, recognising the viability of its science and business plan.

A scientific committee at Amgen evaluated the strength and novelty of the scientific rationale, subject matter expertise of the leadership and business plan viability of the company and awarded Albatroz access to a fully-equipped, turnkey and certified BSL-2 laboratory from NSG Biolabs.

SMES LEVERAGE TECH PROVIDERS TO ACCELERATE DIGITAL AMBITIONS - TDCX REPORT

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 (Bernama) -- Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in ASEAN have set their sights on leveraging external tech providers as a way of accelerating their digital ambitions, according to TDCX latest report.

In a statement, TDCX said SMEs are looking to tech providers such as cloud providers, system integrators, cybersecurity specialists, as well as digital platforms for the expertise they require as they grow their businesses.

Across the five ASEAN countries surveyed, more than 84 per cent of SMEs see value in working with an external tech provider.

Titled ASEAN SMEs: Small Business, Big Opportunity for Tech Providers, the report aims to help tech providers globally understand the approach that ASEAN SMEs are taking to grow their business in the digital economy and their expectations of tech providers.

TDCX Chief Executive Officer, Laurent Junique said: “What was once a nice-to-have is now a must-have and SMEs are making up for lost time by tapping the expertise of digital solution providers. Hence, the time is also ripe for digital solution providers to engage with SMEs to support their digital transformation.”

There are more than 70 million SMEs across ASEAN which make up about 97 per cent of all businesses in the region. ASEAN SMEs have signalled their strong commitment to digitalising through their investments.

Over the last three years, they have invested more than US$78 billion on such initiatives and do not plan to slow down, with a further US$130 billion planned for investment over the next three years. (US$1=RM4.46)

The study revealed that close to half (49 per cent) have only digitalised a few functions across their business. On average, ASEAN SMEs are currently using three tech solutions to support their business needs, with digital marketing being the top area of focus.

While the pandemic has expedited the speed of digitalisation among ASEAN SMEs, the rate of advancement is uneven across the region. One-fifth (20 per cent) of the region’s SMEs only took the plunge to digitalise in the last two years and those in the Consumer Goods, Retail and Food and Beverage (F&B) sectors lag behind their peers in their digitalisation journey.

The study found that SMEs top priority over the next two years is to enhance their data analytics and innovation capabilities. To support their digitalisation push, SMEs are looking to work with tech providers that have strong technical skills (76 per cent), industry knowledge (69 per cent), and speedy response times (65 per cent).

The report was conducted by Intuit Research from Sept to Dec 2022, to understand SMEs' mindset toward digitalisation. A total of 750 SMEs were interviewed in five countries, namely, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand, with an equal number of participants from each country.

GENETICISTS UNVEIL MAIDEN WHOLE GENOME SEQUENCING TEST IN EMBRYOS AT PARIS CONFERENCE

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 (Bernama) -- Dr Santiago Munné, a pioneer in preimplantation genetic diagnosis, presented the first whole genome sequencing test in embryos before delegates at the 20th Conference of the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis International Society (PGDIS), held in Paris.

In his plenary address attended by over 300 experts, Dr Munné, an internationally recognised trailblazer in reproductive genetics, presented validation data for GenomeScreen, the test developed by the research team he leads at the biotechnology firm GenEmbryomics.

GenomeScreen is a revolutionary new whole genome sequencing test for In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) embryos that has been described as "the most complete genetic test in IVF" by authorities at the PGDIS forum.

The test provides highly precise information on the genome sequence of the embryo and the genetic parents, offering families key preimplantation insights on embryo health and reproductive prognosis that can inform their decisions.

Furthermore, this information will be invaluable to individuals born from IVF, as it will provide input on nutrigenomics or guidance on which medicines are most genetically suited to the patient.

“When we first started our research on embryo sequencing, our goal was to create a powerful, comprehensive tool that could equip fertility physicians with exhaustive data for precision screening.

“Now that we have this tool and use it with 99 per cent reliability, we are aware that this diagnosis not only provides information, but also substantially enhances the success of reproductive medicine,” said GenEmbryomics founder, Dr Nick Murphy in a statement.

Dr Munné, whose career as a leader in reproductive genetics spans over 20 years, has made enormous contributions to embryo selection and IVF treatment. With this test, he and his team of researchers solidify the role of genetic testing within reproductive medicine, increasing treatment success.

Founded by Dr Murphy in 2019, GenEmbryomics is a cutting-edge biotech company specialising in the genomic analysis of embryos to determine the most viable candidates for IVF implantation.

Canva: Business Leaders Say Visual Communication Methods Increase Workplace Efficiency

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 (Bernama) -- Canva, the world’s only all-in-one visual communication platform, has released The Visual Economy Report featuring actionable data from 1,600 global business leaders.

It provides the most comprehensive view into how global business leaders are approaching visual communication principles internally and externally to run more efficient teams, build stronger audience engagement and fuel greater economic returns on their business.

Canva Chief Marketing Officer, Zach Kitschke said as business leaders navigate a changing economic environment, visual communication can help brands get ahead.

“Today, capturing anyone’s attention can be fleeting so great design can be make or break for organisations who strive to stand out in this new visual era,” he said in a statement.

Among the top findings of the report are that visual communication enhances workplace efficiency and collaboration, in which nearly all business leaders agree that visual communication methods increase efficiency (90 per cent), enhance collaboration (89 per cent) and carry more authority (85 per cent) than other methods of communication.

In addition, visual communication accelerates sales cycles. With teams more global than ever, visual communication is making it possible for them to be more collaborative; therefore, more productive in a world that is now digital-first.

Furthermore, design literacy is now table stakes for most jobs as it has become critical for most professionals beyond trained designers. For this reason, more than half of business leaders (61 per cent) say that employees in non-design roles are expected to have extensive design knowledge.

The report also reveals that Gen Z is driving design in the workplace as they are more agile and creative and are embracing visual communication tools more frequently. More than other generations, Gen Z (93 per cent) feel visual communication helps them articulate ideas better.

Today’s businesses are operating in a newfound visual economy, where shrinking attention spans and an explosion of digital content have led to a demand for compelling, shareable visuals. Employees and customers now expect a brand's content to be as visual and digestible as what they see across social media platforms.

Canva commissioned Morning Consult to survey business leaders from the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom, in marketing, sales, human resource and commerce who have knowledge of company revenue goals.

NANOMALAYSIA BERHAD AND SNAPTEC ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP FOR THE PRODUCTION OF AURRA SMART WATER PURIFIERS

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 (Bernama) -- NanoMalaysia Berhad (NanoMalaysia Berhad and Snap Technology & Solutions Sdn Bhd (Snaptec) today announced the launching of new models of Aurra intelligent water purifiers, namely “Aurra Pro 2” and “Aurra Plus 2” through joint investment under the former’s Venture Builder programme.

Snaptec’s new cold-water module uses the Peltier effect, which emits or absorbs heat when electric current flows through certain semiconductor materials for both cooling and heating systems. This is in contrast to the majority of the water purifiers available in the market today, which rely on compressors that consume a lot of energy, or semi-tankless technology that still relies on compressors. Snaptec’s innovative technology saves power compared to compressor-based water purifiers, which still consume electricity even when unused.

Peltier technology presents several advantages compared to compressor technology. It is small, lightweight, quiet, and free of vibrations. Moreover, it requires little maintenance and is eco-friendly as it does not release harmful gases. Serdang Paste Tech Sdn Bhd, also NanoMalaysia’s Venture Builder partner, in a previous project, has developed Carbon Nanotube (CNT) based thermal paste with thermal conductivity of up to 0.130 Watts per meter-Kelvin (W/mK) to enhance the Peltier effect’s heat transfer efficiency for Snaptec’s water system. Additionally, Snaptec developed a dedicated software and control printed circuit board (PCB) to manage the improved Peltier technology effectively.

These water purifiers and dispensers feature tankless hot water and a compact 1-litre tank for cold water. The innovative integration of Peltier technology, combined with CNT thermal paste, effectively reduces the water temperature by approximately 12-15°C from ambient temperature (~27°C) while maintaining a high flow rate of 500-550 millilitres per minute. This advanced technology provides approximately 40-50% energy savings, making Snaptec's water purifiers more efficient and cost-effective for consumers.

The "Aurra Pro 2" water purifier is a smart device with an interactive 7-inch Android touchscreen. It can be connected to smartphones, allowing hydration tracking, easy billing, and access to the Snaptec Care Control system. This innovative feature aligns with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) by integrating Internet of Things (IoT) functions with nanotechnology, making the water purifier more advanced and desirable in both local and international markets.

NanoMalaysia Berhad Chief Executive Officer Dr Rezal Khairi Ahmad said: “The successful deployment of the improved efficiency water purifier and dispenser is an excellent example of NanoMalaysia’s unique Venture Builder investment model that connects two projects to activate a value chain for effective commercialisation of local innovations. Snaptec’s products use thermally conductive paste produced by Serdang Paste. Significantly, our collaboration with Snaptec ensures the availability and sustainable management of clean water and sanitation for all while providing energy savings and reduced costs in line with the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals."

Snaptec Founder Neal Wong said: "According to the World Health Organization (WHO), women should drink an average of 2.2 litres of water per day, while men are suggested to drink an average of 2.9 litres per day. Snaptec has a social responsibility to provide clean and healthy water for society. Using the Aurra Water Purifier, our mobile app includes a water tracking function to ensure we drink enough water daily, promoting a healthy lifestyle.”

The water purifiers are targeted towards households that have members with specific needs, such as infants, young children, elderly people, pregnant women, athletes, and those with compromised immune systems. They are also ideal for individuals residing in areas with hard water, high fluoride levels, or poor water quality. Additionally, people who want to improve the taste of their water can also benefit from these water purifiers.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 (Bernama) -- Professional solution provider, rock space has launched two innovative new products for “Cellphone Beautify Customization”, a phone skin printer for customising phone back films and a heat transfer machine for customising phone cases.

In a statement, rock space said both products are worked with its film cutting machine to help consumers achieve on-site customisation and help stores attract customers, in which the machine has provided protective film customisation services for 55,000 stores globally.

Users only need to scan the QR code on the machine to select the model and pattern for customisation, and they can choose from rock space’s official image library or upload their own favourite images to easily achieve personalisation.

The company’s phone skin printer can print exclusive patterns in 79 seconds, and the back film can be cutting on-demand per model by rock space’s film cutting machine.

The printer adopts thermal sublimation printing technology with high image restoration, and the back film is treated with matte finish to be scratch-resistant and waterproof.

Meanwhile, rock space’s heat transfer machine adopts 3D vacuum sublimation technology to transfer the printed film pattern onto a blank case, making the entire pattern more stereoscopic and beautiful with high-definition (HD) images and delicate details.

With the increasing frequency of replacing phone cases by customers, many brands have taken advantage of this trend and launched customised products and services related to phone cases and films.

Under the business model of “Cellphone Beautify Customization”, retail stores only need to stock consumables, and the patterns are customised on site by consumers, which is undoubtedly a good helper for attracting customers.
