UMW GROUP EXPANDS ITS RANGE OF GREEN PRODUCTS THROUGH DISTRIBUTION OF INNIO'S JENBACHER ENGINES; ORGANISES MAIDEN GREEN ENERGY FORUM FOR BIOGAS INDUSTRY PLAYERS

KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) --
UMW Group’s wholly-owned subsidiary, UMW Industrial Power Services Sdn. Bhd. (“UIPS”) has been appointed as the authorised distributor of INNIO’s Jenbacher engines in Malaysia, marking UIPS’ maiden foray into the green and renewable energy sector.  The distribution of this product supports UMW’s Sustainability Pillar under CREST@UMW, which is also in line with the 12th Malaysia Plan’s goal to achieve 100% carbon neutrality by 2050.

To apprise industry players of UIPS’ foray into the green energy sector, UMW and INNIO Jenbacher had organised a Green Energy Forum entitled Biogas, Moving Forward which was held today.  INNIO kicked-off the forum by showcasing its range of products and sharing technology updates on its Jenbacher engines, while UIPS shared its capabilities as a total solution provider for the industry.

YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, delivered a keynote address and subsequently presented Dato’ Ahmad Fuaad Kenali, President & Group CEO, UMW Holdings Berhad with the MyHijau Mark certificate for the Jenbacher gas engines, which is Malaysia’s official green recognition scheme issued by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (“MGTC”).  The presentation of the green certification was witnessed by Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman, Group Chairman, UMW Holdings Berhad and Megat Shahrul Azmir, President of Equipment Division, UMW. Also present at the event were H.E. Andreas Launer, the Austrian Ambassador to Malaysia, Carsten Dommermuth, Vice President & Managing Director, INNIO’s Jenbacher product brand, APAC region, as well as Carl Richers, Vice President, Product Management & Marketing, INNIO’s Jenbacher product brand.

The MyHijau Mark certification presents an opportunity for the product to become a source for green procurement.  Furthermore, with the MyHijau Mark certification, UIPS’s customers will be eligible for Green Income Tax Exemption (“GITE”) and Green Investment Tax Allowance (“GITA”).  The green certification also allows UIPS to promote Jenbacher gas engines as well as offer sales and maintenance support to all biogas plant developers who had secured the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (“SEDA”) Feed-in Tariff (“FiT”) quotas and palm oil mill owners for their own power generation.

INNIO is an Austrian-based global energy solution and service provider for the power generation and compression segments, with products based on renewable energy sources under its portfolio.  INNIO’s Jenbacher products provide sustainable and economical power for businesses and industries ready to invest in a green hydrogen future.  Its engines are paving the way for the global transition to net zero by running on a broad range of energy sources, from natural gas to hydrogen, as well as other renewable gas including biogas.

YB Nik Nazmi in his speech noted that while Malaysia has made reasonable progress in transitioning to a lower carbon energy system, “there is still much to be done to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.”

The government, he said, therefore, will:

I. Improve the existing policy and regulatory framework of electricity supply,
II. Map out a bolder and more aspirational energy transition plan and,
III. Provide avenues and participate in strategic discourse on transformative policies, regulations and financial incentives to stimulate local and regional markets for energy transition.

“But as I have mentioned earlier, the success of this transition will require broad-based alliances.  We need companies to adopt business models and invest, innovate, research, learn and co-create products and technology that support this aim.”

On the collaboration between UIPS and INNIO, UMW Holdings Berhad Group Chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman said, “Our CREST@UMW strategy extends to playing a bigger role in building a sustainable nation, as we work closely with our partners to promote green products.  With the accelerated reach for conscious consumerism, adding INNIO’s Jenbacher engines to our product offering is one of our efforts to promote sustainability, not only into our business strategy but also to our clients, as these engines have obtained the MyHijau Mark certification.  With an estimation of up to 100 MegaWatt (“MW”) of biogas plant capacity set to come online over the next five years, it is envisaged that there will be an increased demand for gas engines as the government continues to award yearly FiT quota and enforce carbon capture and emission controls.”

“Our Jenbacher technology effectively generates clean energy and heat from bio waste, making a significant impact on reducing CO2 emissions.  Power plants using Jenbacher engines operating on natural gas or renewable energy sources can achieve electrical efficiencies of up to a remarkable 48.7%.  Additionally, when operating in combined heat and power configuration, overall efficiency increases up to an impressive 95%.  INNIO is dedicated to delivering solutions that pave the way for a greener and more sustainable future.  And we are proud to support the government of Malaysia's journey to achieve 100% carbon neutrality," said Carl Richers, Vice President, Product Management & Marketing, INNIO’s Jenbacher product brand.

Today’s forum also aims to provide a platform for proactive dialogue between all stakeholders within the biogas industry to strengthen cooperation and encourage innovative collaborations aimed at scaling up the nation’s green agenda.  Government agencies championing the development and advancement of green products namely the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (“MIDA”), MGTC and SEDA also participated in the forum, bringing forth discussions on the nation’s agenda on green energy, including Renewable Energy roadmap, decarbonisation plan, regulations and incentives as well as other relevant topics.

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Secures NASA Contract To Develop Lunar Lander

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) – Blue Origin was awarded a NextSTEP-2 Appendix P Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) contract by NASA for astronaut mission to the moon.

Under this contract, Blue Origin and its National Team partners will develop and fly both a lunar lander that can make a precision landing anywhere on the Moon’s surface and a cislunar transporter.

Blue Origin’s National Team partners include Lockheed Martin, Draper, Boeing, Astrobotic and Honeybee Robotics.

These vehicles were powered by LOX-LH2 and the high-specific impulse of LOX-LH2 provides a dramatic advantage for high-energy deep space missions.

Nevertheless, lower performing but more easily storable propellants (such as hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide as used on the Apollo lunar landers) have been favoured for these missions because of the problematic boil-off of LOX-LH2 during their long mission timelines.

“Through this contract, we will move the state of the art forward by making high-performance LOX-LH2 a storable propellant combination.

“Under SLD, we will develop and fly solar-powered 20-degree Kelvin cryocoolers and the other technologies required to prevent LOX-LH2 boil-off,” said Blue Origin in a statement.

Future missions beyond the Moon, and enabling capabilities such as high-performance nuclear thermal propulsion, will benefit greatly from storable LH2.

Blue Origin’s architecture also prepares for that future day when lunar ice can be used to manufacture LOX and LH2 propellants on the Moon.

Toshiba Unveils High Voltage, Low Current Consumption LDO Regulators

KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 (Bernama) -- Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (Toshiba) has launched the TCR1HF series of Low-Dropout (LDO) regulators that deliver high voltages, a wide input voltage range, and the industry’s lowest stand-by current consumption.

According to Toshiba in a statement, the first three products in the new series are “TCR1HF18B”, “TCR1HF33B”, and “TCR1HF50B”, which offer output voltages of 1.8 volt (V), 3.3V and 5.0V, respectively.

To reduce the power consumption of an electronic product in a standby mode when using a power supply circuit with an LDO regulator, it is necessary the power supply is directly connected to the regulator, and power consumption is reduced by turning off the internal circuit.

The new products support a wide input voltage range of 4V to 36V, which allows them to connect to the 4V to 20V power supply used for USB Power Delivery (PD), and to 24V power supply.

They also feature a stand-by current consumption which is the lowest in the industry, allowing electronic equipment to maintain stand-by operation with very low power consumption.

Toshiba will continue to expand the TCR1HF series line-up by adding products with different functions or output voltage values for diverse applications.

The company is a leading supplier of advanced semiconductor and storage solutions, draws on over half a century of experience and innovation to offer customers and business partners outstanding discrete semiconductors, system large-scale integrations (LSIs) and hard disk drives (HDD) products.

10 Big Challenges For Passenger Aviation Sustainability For Next 3 Years - Avia Solutions Group Chairman

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) -- In recent years, ensuring sustainable operations has become a primary driver for aviation businesses, and yet this dynamic industry faces a multitude of challenges that can impede companies' efforts to enhance profitability.

In a statement, Avia Solutions Group Chairman, Gediminas Ziemelis said the aviation industry has experienced a significant drop in demand for air travel, resulting in many airlines facing financial losses, in recent years and has highlighted 10 big challenges for passenger aviation sustainability for the next three years.

To stay afloat during this time, airlines have taken on additional debt, but this increased debt has resulted in higher risk for lenders, leading to higher market interest rates for the airlines.

In addition to the impact of the pandemic on the industry, other factors such as rising fuel costs and increased competition have also contributed to the financial struggles of many airlines.

Another challenge passenger aviation face is compensations for flight delays will impact airlines' unplanned costs. In 2019, EU airlines carried a total of 1.12 billion passengers, with 1.7 million flights experiencing delays and resulting in a total compensation pay-out of €6.3 billion. Only 10 per cent of affected passengers currently file complaints directly with the airlines or via specialised service companies. (€1 = RM4.90)

In addition, LEAP engines challenges will impact more aircraft on the ground and shortage of capacity, while Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) production and supply chain disrupted during 2023-2025 will cause a shortage of aircraft capacity.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the aerospace industry with OEMs such as Boeing and Airbus have experienced significant disruptions in their production and supply chains.

The aviation industry also faces a constant demand for new pilots, as approximately three per cent of pilots retire annually. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a major setback in the industry, with all cadet programmes being either postponed or cancelled causing pilot shortage and rapid increase in costs for airlines.

Another challenging situation in the industry after COVID-19, has pushed airlines to take on additional debt to finance various aspects of their operations, such as spare parts, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, and aircraft leasing.

However, the increase in outstanding debt for the industry could have significant implications, with some airlines potentially struggling to pay off their debts, which could result in a reduction in capacity as airlines are forced to ground some of their aircraft or cut routes to minimise costs.

Toshiba Launches Solution Detecting Temperature Rises In Electronic Equipment

KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Bernama) — Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (Toshiba) has launched the first two products in its Thermoflagger over-temperature detection IC series namely, “TCTH021BE” and “TCTH022BE”, which does not have a latching function for the FLAG signal when it detects abnormal states; and have a latching function, respectively.

According to Toshiba in a statement, the products detect temperature rises inside electronic equipment in a simple circuit configuration with positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistors.

For electronic equipment to perform as specified, their semiconductors and electronic components must operate within design parameters.

Temperature is one crucial parameter, especially if the internal temperature becomes higher than that assumed during the design process. This can be a major problem in respect of safety and reliability, and requires an overheating monitoring solution to detect any rise in temperature.

The new Thermoflagger ICs are used in combination with PTC thermistors that change their resistance values according to the temperature.

Both products detect changes in the resistance value of a PTC thermistor placed close to heat sources, and output FLAG signals to indicate over-temperature, while connecting PTC thermistors in series realises over-temperature detection for multiple locations.

Thermoflagger ICs allow users to configure over-temperature detection for an entire electronic product easily, and help to reduce its size and power consumption.

An advanced semiconductor and storage solutions supplier, Toshiba will continue to develop Thermoflagger ICs with various functions.
