CYBERJAYA, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s first certification programme for technology transfer professionals, the Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP), kicked off with a 3-day workshop on 21st November 2017 at MIGHT Partnership Hub. Funded by the Newton-Ungku Omar Fund, the national initiative was introduced by PlaTCOM Ventures, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM) with the British Council and Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) as delivery partners to pave the path in establishing technology transfer as a recognised profession in Malaysia. The programme is also supported by the Innovation and Technology Managers Association (ITMA) of Malaysia.
The RTTP certification programme is the first-of-its-kind in Malaysia that focuses on the establishment of technology transfer as a recognised profession. Participants are being trained on the entire breadth of technology transfer and commercialisation process that will result in Malaysian technology transfer professionals being recognised as Registered Technology Transfer Professionals (RTTP) – a globally recognised qualification. This designation acknowledges the accomplishments, roles, skills, knowledge, and expertise of technology transfer professionals worldwide. The Alliance of Technology Transfer Professionals (ATTP) – under which the RTTP qualification is awarded – is a global network that sets quality standards for the technology transfer profession and promotes a common core skillset. The alliance represents more than 10,000 professionals.
For the first cohort of the RTTP certification programme, 30 participants from the private and public sectors were selected upon application to join the programme. Participants are expected to complete two 3-day workshops and a conference on technology transfer recognised by ATTP to attain full credits for the certification. As such the technology transfer and innovation commercialisation conference will be held in Malaysia in Q3 of 2018 with an expected participation of more than 100 technology transfer professionals from the local and international innovation landscapes.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the first workshop in the programme, Dr. Viraj Perera, Chief Executive Officer of PlaTCOM Ventures Sdn. Bhd. said, “the programme is a tremendous boost to the Malaysian research institutes especially to those personnel who are tasked with the transfer of intellectual property rights within the technology transfer and commercialisation units. It adds credence to their professional qualifications as technology transfer professionals and it certainly uplifts the value of their knowledge and skills on a global platform together with formal professional recognition”.
