KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 (Bernama) -- Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Tesco Malaysia) raised RM400,000 through its Tesco Walk For Kids 2018 on April 29 to assist eight underserved schools it has adopted in Perak.
The charity walkathon gathered more than 3, 000 participants including families, individual students and teachers, and the local community walking a 3km scenic route within the D.R. Seenivasagam Park and its vicinity.
It was Tesco Malaysia's signature annual fundraising event and part of Tesco's School Adoption Programme to support underserved schools.
The eight beneficiary schools are SK Seri Kepayang, Ipoh; SK De La Salle, Kampar; SK Pengkalan Pegoh, Ipoh; SK Bendang Siam, Changkat Jering; SK Pengkalan Baharu, Gopeng; SMK Tambun, Ipoh; SK Suak Padi, Bota and SK Dato' Ishak, Lumut.
Tesco corporate services director, Azliza Azmel said: "We are touched by the support we received from many, especially our business partners and suppliers as this is our second time organising this event for our adopted schools."
"Last year, we were able to help seven schools in Klang Valley. I am delighted that we could host this event in Ipoh this time to help our adopted schools in Perak to improve the schools' facilities such as students' toilets, library, computer lab, and students' chairs and desks for a better and conducive learning environment."
Tesco Walk For Kids 2018 was flagged off by Datuk Seri Raja Yong Sofia Sultan Azlan Shah, accompanied by Pintar Foundation chief executive officer, Karimah Tan Abdullah, and Azliza.
Limited edition finisher medals were given to the first 1,000 participants to get across the finish line as well as goodie bags upon completing the walk.
The participants were entertained by dance performances by a few of the beneficiary schools.
Other activities included physical challenges such as planking, push-ups, skipping and squats with attractive prizes for the winners. Product sampling from Milo, Tesco brand and Bestari were also available for all participants.
Tesco Malaysia launched its School Adoption Programme together with Pintar Foundation in November 2016 as part of its contribution to the education of children.
The three-year adoption programme allows Tesco to support all 61 adopted schools around the country in terms of education, student welfare, nutritional awareness, and greener living initiatives.
