KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 (Bernama) -- The Orchid Run & Ride 2019, with the theme, ‘Taking Steps to Energise Lives’, was held on 6 October 2019 at Persiaran KLCC here and successfully raised more than RM500,000 for charity.
The annual effort, organised by the Association of Wives and Women Staff of PETRONAS (PETRONITA), successfully increased the proceeds this year, with an increase of about RM100,000 over the previous year, to benefit various charitable organisations.
The beneficiaries include the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia, the Child Development and Rehabilitation Centre of the Women and Children Hospital Kuala Lumpur, ‘Tabung PPUMCare’ founded by University Malaya Medical Centre as well as the Mental Illness Awareness and Support Association.
“For the past five years, Orchid Run & Ride has served as an effective platform to give back to society and lend a helping hand to the less fortunate. The activity also encourages families and friends to spend quality time together in advocating a healthy and active lifestyle,” said President of PETRONITA, Puan Sri Dr Azura Ahmad Tajuddin.
Puan Sri Dr Azura presented the event’s proceeds to representatives of the four charity organisations today, witnessed by PETRONAS President and Group CEO, Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin.
Similar to previous years, the response this year has been overwhelming with all categories filled in July, achieving the target participation of 7,300 runners and cyclists.
Orchid Run & Ride has, over the years, attracted an increasing number of participants in three main categories:
Category A – 12km Run: Men’s and Women’s Open (open to ages 16 years and above)
Category B – 5km Fun Run: (open to ages seven years and above) and
Category C – 5km Fun Ride (for ages 12 years and above)
Aside from the run and ride activities, participants were also entertained by local talents such as Aman RA and Drum Circle. Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Motorsport driver Valtteri Bottas was also present to lend his support to the event.
“Orchid Run & Ride’s outstanding achievement would not have been possible without the contribution and support from everyone. Even the smallest act of kindness can bring a world of difference to others. PETRONITA would like to thank all participants and supporters for taking steps to energise the lives of the ones in need,” said Puan Sri Dr Azura.
Orchid Run & Ride will once again return in 2020.
