In Malaysia, family-owned businesses make up 70% of companies listed on Bursa Malaysia, contributing significantly to the nation’s GDP. Out of our 11 Best Managed 2022 winners, 6 are in Bursa Malaysia’s top 100 companies by market cap.

This year’s winning companies are made up of new applicants who have successfully qualified as a Best Managed for the first time along with 4 re-qualifying companies who have qualified to maintain their Best Managed status year on year.

An international awards program, Best Managed applies a proven evaluation process to assess businesses’ quality of management in areas including strategy, capabilities and innovation, culture and commitment, as well as governance and financials. Launched in Malaysia in 2021, the evaluation of the awards is based on more than 25 years of observed practice from the global awards program that has been rolled out to more than 50 countries worldwide.

Entrants to the program strive for this prestigious designation in a rigorous and independent process that evaluates their management skills and practices. This includes having their business strategy and operations analysed and benchmarked against an evaluation framework that is applied across the world. Business leaders then use the process to sharpen strategies and derive valuable insights to help them refine their strategies and operations, optimising business growth.

An independent judging panel comprising business and academia representatives determined the winners based on the leading practices of Best Managed Companies. This year’s panel include Professor Emerita Datuk Dr Asma Ismail, Ibn Sina Chair for Medicine, International Islamic University Malaysia; Datuk Sri Dr Michael Yam, Chairman, InvestKL; and Datuk Umar Swift, Chief Executive Officer, Bursa Malaysia Bhd.

Best Managed Companies winners are encouraged to re-join the program every year to continuously challenge, improve, and grow their company to retain their Best Managed Companies status. Winners will join the Best Managed community comprising 1200 companies who have achieved this mark of business excellence, thus elevating and adding credibility to their brand, and broadening their market presence. Best Managed Companies winners are invited to the annual regional symposium and networking events.

In Malaysia’s inaugural Best Managed Companies 2021, four companies were recognised - BIG Pharmacy Healthcare Sdn Bhd; MR. D.I.Y. Group (M) Bhd; MAMEE-Double Decker (M) Sdn Bhd; and Sunway Group.

Note to Editors:  Some of the winners are listed companies. The term ‘private enterprise’ is used because the majority share of the company is still held privately either directly or indirectly. This is how we qualify a company’s eligibility for the Best Managed Companies program.
