LANGKAWI, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- The Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI) and Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) have collaborated to organise the fifth International Symposium on Biological Control of Arthropods starting today at a leading hotel, here.
The symposium's scientific programme committee chairman, Dr Ulli Kuhlman in his welcoming remarks said 130 experts from 25 countries, among them from China, United States, New Zealand, Europe, Africa and Malaysia, were participating in the symposium.
"A total of 14 scientific topics on biological control will be presented by experts over the next five days," he said in his welcoming remarks at the opening of the symposium by Langkawi Member of Parliament, Datuk Nawawi Ahmad.
Kuhlman said discussions at the event would dwell on the compatibility of biological controls with pesticide use, importance of regulations and assessment, benefit-sharing policies, cost and benefit ratio and socio-economic impact of biological control.
"Also relevant in this context is what it takes for biological control to replace more and more of the highly hazardous pesticides in the long run, as well as market access for the multiplying number of farmers around the world," he added.
Nawawi, in his opening speech, said the symposium was a great opportunity for the experts to meet and exchange information on biological control.
"It is indeed encouraging to have these professionals coming together with a common purpose and perhaps, conviction to spread biological control messages," he added.
CABI is a not-for-profit scientific research, publishing and international development agency based in Oxfordshire, England, which aims to improve people's lives worldwide by solving problems in agriculture and the environment.
