MARY KAY INC. AND THE MARY KAY ASH FOUNDATION FURTHER COMMIT TO THE PREVENTION AND ELIMINATION OF GLOBAL GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
DALLAS, Nov 25 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- In recognition of the upcoming International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women kicking off the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, Mary Kay Inc. and the Mary Kay Ash Foundation today announced a renewed, joint commitment to the prevention and elimination of gender-based violence by joining the Generation Equality Action Coalition on Gender-Based Violence. The commitment—which the organizations made public during UN Women’s recent Generation Equality Forum in Paris—is just the latest step the storied beauty brand and its charitable arm have made in the interest of improving the lives of women everywhere.
The Action Coalition on Gender-Based Violence, co-led by UN Women and by the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women (UN Trust Fund), among other leaders, is a powerful global movement mobilizing governments, international organizations, philanthropies, and the private sector to deliver transformational progress towards the elimination of gender-based violence through four concrete actions:
· Creating enabling policy, legal and resource environments;
· Scaling up evidence driven prevention programming;
· Scaling up comprehensive, accessible, and quality services for survivors;
· Enabling and empowering autonomous girl-led and women’s rights organizations to exercise their expertise.
A goal of the Generation Equality Gender-Based Violence Action Coalition is to have 550 million more women and girls live in countries with laws and policies prohibiting all forms of gender-based violence against women and girls by 2026, among others. During the Forum, UN Women committed to amplifying support and funding to women’s rights organizations by working with partners to secure a minimum of 100 million USD in grants to be allocated through the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women (UN Trust Fund) over the next five years.
“There is a gender-based violence global emergency,” said Ryan Rogers, Chief Investment Officer for Mary Kay Inc., and Vice President of the Mary Kay Ash FoundationSM Board of Directors. “Violence experienced by women and girls is significantly underreported—but it’s estimated that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 adolescent girls have experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner. We must take action now. Since 2000, the Mary Kay Ash Foundation has awarded more than $58 million to domestic violence shelters. Our commitment to the Action Coalition on Gender-Based Violence will allow us to stretch that aid even further.”

NTHU: Taiwan successfully treats Japanese afflicted with malignant brain tumour
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 -- Japan has donated five batches of the AZ COVID-19 vaccine to Taiwan, and Taiwan has reciprocated by providing treatment at NTHU’s Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Center (BNCTC) for a 20-year-old Japanese woman suffering from malignant brain tumour.
According to a statement, the treatment was a success, and she has now returned to school.
The doctor in charge of the treatment was Yi-Wei Chen of the Oncology Department at Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH). He said that only Taiwan and Japan have medical centres using boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) to treat cancer.
However, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare has not yet approved BNCT for treating malignant brain tumours, leaving Taiwan as the only source of treatment for malignant brain tumours that are difficult to treat by surgery.
Chen said that the Japanese patient was originally diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma of the right ear canal at age six. After surgery and chemotherapy, the condition was stable for a time.
Unexpectedly, the tumour recurred in 2018, and the tumour metastasised to the hindbrain. After it was determined that it turned out to be malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour, she received heavy particle and CyberKnife treatment in Japan, but the tumour still recurred.
She went to the THOR BNCT Cancer Center for treatment on Sept 17. After the injection of the Boron-10 drug and a 20-minute session of neutron source irradiation, she had a group photo in front of the NSTDC with the medical team, who presented her with a teddy bear wearing a graduation cap, as a way of wishing her a speedy ‘graduation’ from her cancer.
Working closely with the TVGH, the BNCTC has treated over 100 patients from all over the world, including Spain, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, Japan, and China.
BNCT is a kind of targeted radiotherapy in which the patient is first injected with a boron-containing drug; once the drug has accumulated in the tumour, the neutron beam from the nuclear reactor is used to irradiate the tumour, and the high-energy particles generated by the boron neutron capture reaction effectively kill off the tumour cells, without damaging nearby normal cells.

CHINA-SINGAPORE FINANCIAL COOPERATION SHARES BENEFITS WITH THE WORLD
CHONGQING, China, Nov. 22, 2021 /Xinhua-AsiaNet/--
China-Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative Financial Summit (CCI-FS) will be held in Chongqing and Singapore parallelly from November 23 to 24, the Information Office of the Chongqing Municipal People's Government announced on November 15. CCI-FS this year will be held under the theme: Deepening China-ASEAN Financial Cooperation, Creating a New Paradigm of Interconnectivity. As a key event under the third intergovernmental cooperation project between China and Singapore, CCI-FS has been successfully held for three times. In November 2015, the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity (CCI) was officially launched with financial services as one of its four priority areas. In the past six years, our vision to reduce financing cost in western China and benefit the whole world by strengthening financial cooperation between China and Singapore has become a reality. Since the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, shipping and air transportation have been hampered, however, the cargo volume along China-Europe Railway Express has instead increased despite the disruptions, a vital support to Europe in fighting COVID-19 and maintaining the stability of global supply chain. The success of China-Europe freight train services cannot be made without CCI cross-border financing projects. Under the CCI framework, Chongqing International Logistics Hub, where the starting terminal of China-Europe Railway Express, i.e. Chongqing Tuanjiecun Railway is located, issued bonds worth USD500 million in Singapore with lower cost than that in the domestic market. The issuance has raised funds for infrastructure construction in the hub, so that financial cooperation plays its role to create a better port terminal. This is a miniature of successful CCI financial cooperation. Up to now, Chongqing's cross-border financing under the CCI totaled USD15.5 billion with its comprehensive financing cost 1.03 percentage points lower than domestic level, and the whole western China region has raised over USD5.7 billion in Singapore. The benefits of CCI financial cooperation have been shared by the world. The New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor (ILSTC) serves as a major international logistics channel between China and Southeast Asian countries. By means of railway, sea and road, goods from western China can travel southward and access the world market through coastal and border ports such as Guangxi and Yunnan, with shorter time compared with the traditional route from eastern China. Meanwhile, the CCI cross-border financial services are empowering the ILSTC. A financial service platform jointly built by China and Singapore for the corridor provides convenient and low-cost financial services for logistics, trade and manufacturing enterprises along the route, and also empowers its operation companies. For instance, electronic products made in the Vietnam factory of LG Group arrived in Chongqing via the ILSTC, and then were transported to Europe through the China-Europe Railway Express, thus cutting logistics duration by over a half compared with sea transportation. Likewise, Made-in-Germany goods are transported to Southeast Asian markets through the two corridors with halved logistics duration. Therefore, the ILSTC has lowered both transportation time and service cost among China, Southeast Asian and European countries, and thus enabled related companies to better share the fruits of sustained economic growth and regional integration. "In the past five years, Chongqing and Singapore have enhanced financial connectivity between western China and ASEAN countries through the CCI financial cooperation," said Ravi Menon, Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). "In the next five years, China and Singapore will seize new opportunities, implement the Five-Year Plan of CCI Financial Cooperation with high standards, and make new gounds in bilateral financial cooperation," said Ruan Lu, Director General of Chongqing Financial Regulatory Bureau. LCNM PARTNERS NCSM & PFIZER TO IMPROVE HEALTH LITERACY ON LUNG CANCER
Launched in conjunction with Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November, the patient guide was developed in English, Malay, and Mandarin as a digital resource to improve health literacy on lung cancer as well as to facilitate better communication between patients and their healthcare providers.
“A diagnosis of lung cancer is often unexpected and can be overwhelming. The vast volume of information available on the internet these days can be confusing, daunting, and even misleading. In a recent survey conducted by LCNM, 88% of respondents felt a lung cancer patient may have difficulty discussing their condition or feel lost and worried upon learning their diagnosis, whilst 61% acknowledged that poor awareness of the disease and available treatment options was a barrier to seeking early effective intervention¹,” said Dr Anand Sachithanandan, President of Lung Cancer Network Malaysia & Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon.
“The guide addresses common questions, misconceptions and concerns people often have upon diagnosis. The treatment landscape for lung cancer is rapidly changing, for the better. We hope this guide will help demystify the disease and empower patients to make informed decisions and appropriate choices on their cancer journey, with guidance from their doctor,” said Dr Anand Sachithanandan.
In addition to the patient guide, the #KeepBreathing campaign by LCNM and Pfizer continues its efforts in closing the knowledge gap about lung cancer. In September 2021, an online survey was conducted to examine health literacy levels among Malaysians about lung cancer, behavioural patterns, and their perceptions of the disease.
“We undertook this survey to understand and address gaps in the lung cancer dialogue across a spectrum of respondents. Raising public awareness that lung cancer can strike people who have never smoked, and former smokers who quit many years ago challenges negative stereotypes, and shifts blame away from the patient,” said Dr Tho Lye Mun, Vice President of LCNM & Clinical Oncologist at the #KeepBreathing virtual media event.
“It is also important to draw the public’s attention to new advances in research and treatment to bring messages of hope and survival to the lung cancer community. Notably, many lung cancer patients continue to live well after their diagnosis owing to medical advances. One of the most exciting advances in lung cancer research is the development of new targeted therapies. These are medicines directed to specific proteins that arise from mutations in the DNA of the tumour that make the cancer grow. This helps us to use treatments that are individualised for that particular person,” added Dr Tho.
