MIMOS-POWERED INNOVATION HUB SET TO ACCELERATE INDUSTRY 4.0 ADOPTION

Facilities to reskill and upskill local talent in latest technologies to catalyse the E&E ecosystem

BAYAN LEPAS, April 27 (Bernama) -- The Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with national applied research and development centre, MIMOS, to collaborate on completing the Industry 4.0 value chain, and support industry needs in Penang and the Northern Region.  An MoU exchange ceremony was held here on Wednesday (25 Apr 2018).

Subsequent to the MoU, an Innovation Hub was launched to provide high-technology industry training that will support and accelerate Industry 4.0 adoption.

The MoU documents were exchanged between PSDC Chief Executive Officer Muhamed Ali Hajah and MIMOS Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Rizan Ibrahim.

Under the MoU, MIMOS is offering its technologies, capacities, expertise and ecosystems in information and communications technologies (ICT), Semiconductor, Microelectronics and Embedded Systems to support training programmes offered by PSDC.

Through this initiative, MIMOS will also set up an Augmented Reality - Virtual Reality laboratory as well as an Internet of Things laboratory to complement existing facilities at PSDC. The Innovation Hub will also cover Nanotechnologies, Photonics and Wireless Communications in addition to training facilities in emerging technologies such as Big Data Analytics, Edge Computing, Artificial Intelligence, 3D-Printing and Smart Manufacturing.

According to Ahmad Rizan, the Innovation Hub will reskill and upskill existing local talent, apart from enrolling and nurturing new batches of talent.  He said, the establishment of the Innovation Hub will not only bring Industry 4.0 technologies and talent to Malaysian industries but also to multinational companies having operations here.

Ahmad Rizan said that MIMOS was aware of the criticalness of talent development in improving social mobility and wellbeing of the people in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, towards which Malaysian industry must embrace Industry 4.0.  This would bode well for the country’s transformation agenda, he said.

Muhamed Ali said that PSDC is proud to once again collaborate with MIMOS in supporting and improving the uptake new technologies by companies through the provision of proper training and shared services to the industry.

PSDC and MIMOS have been working together in talent development to support industry with skilled workforce in the areas of Manufacturing, Semiconductor, as well as Electrical and Electronics (E&E) services for the past decade.

The launch of the Innovation Hub is expected to further synergise PSDC and MIMOS in offering technology and talent solutions needed for the industries in Penang and Malaysia’s Northern Region.
