KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 (Bernama) – Forty-five UMW Community Champions (volunteers) in 15 four-wheel-drive vehicles joined the ‘Kembara MSAM-UMW 2018’, travelling about 110 kilometres to reach selected villages in Batu Pahat, Johor on April 7 to 9.
The mission was to assist the Orang Asli, old folks,
and underprivileged students and families, and held in conjunction with the
‘Saham Amanah Malaysia Week (MSAM) 2018’.
The convoy was flagged off by Matrade chairman, Datuk Dr
Noraini Ahmad; Permodalan Nasional Berhad deputy president and group
chief operating officer (Asset Management), Datuk Idris Kechot; and UMW
Holdings Berhad president and group CEO, Badrul Feisal Abdul Rahim.
The volunteers who comprised UMW employees from Shah
Alam and 1Malaysia Training Scheme (SL1M) trainees distributed
essential items like rice, cooking oil, flour, and sugar to the villagers.
“On the second day of the event, a gotong-royong was
held at Kampung Sri Merlong in Rengit for the benefit of 200
underprivileged families, and in Kampung Nelayan Sri Pantai in
Senggarang to assist 50 Orang Asli families.
“The volunteers helped build a cottage for a
poor family and assisted to paint the jetty, boats and the community hall.
The UMW Group also contributed its very own Grantt engine oil to the fishermen.
“The Kembara MSAM-UMW also reached out to the community-based
rehabilitation centre in Parit Raja and Penggaram, as well as a senior
citizens’ centre in Penggaram. Around 400 students and the underprivileged
benefited from this corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme,” UMW
Corporation said in a statement today.
The programme was part of UMW’s support for underprivileged
communities in the country under its community development pillar.
It champions many worthy causes under its three CSR pillars, with the
other two being education and environment.
