Blossoming peonies boost economy of Linxia, China

KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 (Bernama) -- The blossoming rockii peonies in Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province has boosted the economy of Linxia in China.

Linxia Tourism Bureau in a statement said the initial statistics showed that Linxia had received about two million visitors from May 1 to 24, 2018.

The colourful rockii peonies along Binhe Road in Linxia have formed a peony promenade up to 60 miles long, while visitors can enjoy the charm of the place by walking around the garden.

The peony has many properties that can be used to generate income. Its root and bark, for instance, can be used as a medicine, while the rockii peony has good woody oil that can be refined. In addition, the peony´s pistil and stamen, petals and shoots can all make tea.

Wangping Village, a mountainous settlement in Linxia, had hence planted more than 170 mu of peony and is known as the first peony village in Hezhou, with 172 of the village´s 252 households being poor families in 2013 but the number reduced to six in 2017.

Now the village has set up an oil peony plantation cooperative as planting peony seedlings, with a single cycle of five years, saves labour and brings farmers over 100,000 yuan per mu rather than planting wheat which generates a small income.

"Peony stamen tea is sold by grams, which can sell at almost 10,000 yuan per 500 grams, " said a pioneer of the peony industry in Wangping Village, He ShengHong, who not only circulates land for seedling cultivation but also develops peony tea products.

"The poverty alleviation in the northwest is like the rockii peony, which will bloom one day though it blossoms late, " he said.
