GALERI PETRONAS SHOWCASES DISTINCTIVE CULTURAL EXPRESSIONS FOR ITS YEAR END EXHIBITION

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) --  Rediscover the cultural links among China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand through Crafting Artistry Exhibition, GALERI PETRONAS’ final exhibition for 2019, focusing on a region situated at the crossroads of the maritime silk and spice road.

Distinctive exhibits such as textile, fibre, wood, ceramic and metal, drawn from common cultural roots, namely China and India, demonstrate how artistic influence from the two major civilisations spread to Malaysia and its South-East Asian neighbours.

According to guest curator Edric Ong: “For hundreds of years, the inter-regional exchange through trade, migration and the spread of religions have had a profound influence on the expression of Asian arts and crafts, evolving within each country into their own unique characters.”

The exhibition was launched by Yang Di-Pertua, Association of Wives and Women Staff of PETRONAS (PETRONITA), Puan Sri Dr Azura Ahmad Tajuddin, who said in her speech: “Through the gallery, PETRONAS provides a platform for expressing views and opinions on issues relating to humanity while promoting art as a universal language that transcends man-made barriers. Such endeavour is hoped to foster closer relations among the people of Malaysia, including with those from other nations, by creating a better understanding of one another's cultures, lifestyles, beliefs and practices through art.”

Also present was PETRONAS Senior General Manager, Group Strategic Communications, Zahariah (Liza) Abdul Rahman who said in her welcoming remarks: “As a global energy and solutions company, deep understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures are paramount. PETRONAS continues to foster and strengthen intercultural relationships and understanding through the exhibition and specially-developed interpretative programmes.”

Crafting Artistry Exhibition is currently open for public viewing at GALERI PETRONAS on Level 3, Suria KLCC until December 29, 2019. Admission is free.

About CRAFTING ARTISTRY Exhibition

Crafting Artistry: A Journey Along the Maritime Silk and Spice Road is GALERI PETRONAS’ final exhibition for 2019. It is an exhibition that brings together distinctive cultural expressions of six countries - China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.

It seeks to rediscover links drawn from a common root of influence, namely China and India, and how they have spread to the South East Asian region, through the trade and migration routes on land and by sea.

Therefore, by showcasing traditional and contemporary art forms, the exhibition not only celebrates the cultural strength that has perpetuated but also highlights the creative imaginings of artists and craftsmen of each country.
