KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 (Bernama) -- In conjunction with International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrated annually on March 8, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has paid special tribute to its first female member through a webinar.
The webinar titled, Ethel Ayres Purdie Lecture, is a global one-hour webinar which talks about diversity.
In 1909 in the United Kingdom, Ethel Ayres Purdie became the first female member of ACCA and went on to being the leading provider of income tax advice to women, eventually operating as the Women's Taxpayers Agency.
ACCA in a statement said it had strong commitment to gender diversity, both as a professional body and employer. Its council consists of 34 members, of which 21 (61 per cent) were women.
In addition, ACCA was the first global professional accountancy body to appoint a woman president (Vera Di Palma). Meanwhile, Anthea Rose became ACCA chief executive while Datuk Alexandra Chin (Asia Pacific region) became the first Malaysian to be elected the association president in 2016.
Concurrently, the accountancy body has also launched its microsite which includes interviews and profiles of women members.
IWD is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender balance.
The global theme for this year is 'Better the Balance, Better the World’ (#balanceforbetter) - reiterating the need for a better working world driven by gender-balance.
