KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 (Bernama) --
An installation artwork titled 'Connect', which represents the connection
between people within a family by Tan Yi Ching captured the hearts of
judges, winning her the grand prize in the MyCreative Ventures Visual Arts
Pitch 3 (VAP 3) competition.
Tan, 22,
from Dasein Academy of Art, said she was inspired to make the artwork after
moving out of her family house to pursue her studies.
"Being
apart made me realise that wherever we are, our family stays close at heart and
we will always feel connected with them," he told Bernama at the VAP 3
awards ceremony, here, tonight.
Tan said she
took three months to finish the project and the most challenging part was
collecting handprints of her family members using four layers of white glue and
thread to connect each person's dried handprint.
"It is
a project about family, memories and relationship. While waiting for the
glue to dry, I had a good get-together with my family," she
added.
Tan' s
artwork was one of the 180 pieces submitted for the competition which began on
May 31 and concluded on Sept 30.
'Connect'
and other selected artworks from the VAP 3 competition are being displayed at
Ken Gallery in Taman Tun Dr Ismail until Nov 23.
As the grand
prize winner, Tan walked away with RM8,000 cash. The second place
went to Hirzaq Harris who received RM5,000 through his artwork titled 'The
Eye', and the third place to Siti Fazira Ahmad Basri through her 'Miniature
Paintings' (RM2,000).
Meanwhile, MyCreative
Group chief executive officer, Riza Saian said the competition was
aimed at fostering and inculcating love and appreciation for art, especially
among the young, by offering an avenue to promote and nurture creative artistic
expressions.
"We are
indeed blessed to have an abundance of talented, hardworking people in the
Malaysian visual arts community where artists and curators work together
tirelessly to enhance and develop the industry” he said.
